QuickStart
Wall Starter
This stainless steel system includes all wall
ties and fixings to join a single skin of
masonry, 2400mm high, to an existing wall.
Integral fold-down wall ties are fast and
simple to install and can help maintain an
accurate masonry gauge.
Each pack contains:
• 2 x Starter strips
(10 integral wall ties)
• 1 x Fixings pack
(5 screws, 5 plugs,
5 washers)
Suitable for:
• Brickwork and blockwork
• Single leaf and cavity walls
• Internal and external walls
• Wall widths from 60mm
to 250mm
The design shear strength of the system is
4.3kN for a wall height of 2400mm, when
fixed to one of the following materials: solid
clay bricks; solid dense or lightweight
aggregate concrete blocks; solid aerated
concrete blocks with a minimum crushing
strength of 3.5N/mm2.

Equipment required:
Spirit level, drill with 10mm masonry bit, 10mm spanner/socket, protective gloves and head/eye wear.
Prior to installation
Remove render, debris etc from existing wall where new
wall will join.
Figure 1
Mark the position of the five fixing holes following the
guidance below:
• Position vertically by folding down the bottom wall tie so
it will sit in the required horizontal mortar joint, normally
either the third brick course or first block course
• Position horizontally by ensuring the wall starter will be
central to the new wall
• When overlapped, the strips should be fixed through the
first and last slot, at the point of overlap and at two
other points in-between (alternate 450mm and 600mm
centres are recommended)
Notes
In cavity wall construction, each leaf requires a separate starter
system. In external wall construction, a 10mm wide weather seal
should be constructed between the existing brickwork and the
new wall using either a flexible mastic sealant or a compressible
sealing strip. Your local Building Control Officer should be
consulted regarding further weatherproofing which may be
required in accordance with Building Regulations. For walls less
than 2400mm high, use a hacksaw to shorten the top strip and fix
through the highest remaining fixing hole. Each strip should have
3 fixing points (including an overlap fixing between channels).
For walls greater than 2400mm high, additional QuickStart wall
starters may be used by continuing to overlap the strips.
Figure 2
Drill 10mm diameter holes and install wall plugs. Orientate
first strip so the integral wall ties will fold downwards when
required and loosely fix strip at the bottom two fixing
points. Insert second strip into the top of the first strip,
again ensuring integral ties will fold downwards, and
loosely fix at the remaining three fixing points. When both
strips are in position check for plumb and then fully tighten
screws, in any order.
Figure 3
Fold down ties every 225mm and build into the bed joints
of the new wall.
Folding out all ties ahead of the build may help maintain
accurate masonry coursing (users should take care when
working around protruding wall ties, protective head and
eye wear is recommended).
