Introduction of Model
In the model formed we used a spring as soil, water in it is considered as moisture and the holes in the
piston are considered as pores of soil. A pressure gauge is attached which is for the measurement of the
applied pressure, A rod with plate is used for carrying load and a valve is attached for the entrance and
removal of water.
Different weight having values in pound are used
Objective
1. To check the relation between time and settlement of soil.
2. To check the properties of soil in very short time.
3. To check that consolidation is the process of adjustment of the volume of soil, pore water under an
applied load on soil.

Methodology
At the very first instance the external load is applied to the piston. The load is fully transferred to the
water. Hence, water is stressed, but the spring is not. Thus the reaction of water to external pressure
means that at this instant water carries the full external load. As time goes on water will escape through
the perforations made in the piston, out of the vessel. With large perforations, as said, water escape
faster and the springs will start to receive and to carry some of the externally applied load, sooner than
with the slow escape water. Faster the water leaves the vessel sooner the spring will carry the externally
applied load. Thus, the sooner will attain their full deformation. It shows that gradual decrease in
neutral pressure take place, along with a gradual increase in effective pressure, therefore the sum is
constant and equal to total pressure in magnitude
So,
P=pe+u=p’e+u’=p”e+u”=constant

Results
Thus, time is directly proportional to the Deformation under a certain load. Consolidation is the process
of adjustment of the volume of soil, pore water under an applied load on soil.

Its readings are accurate but can be improved.
Error can’t reduce we can reduce it so Leakage can be reduce more.
It is very cheap, very simple and easy to operate.
It is very beneficial for understanding consolidation process.
By this we can easily measure and understand the time-settlement relationship.
If we use its prototype in field then we can easily find the strength of any type of soil.
We can easily differentiate between soil, silt and clay.
It is very useful in field and demands a deep research study.
