MERIT BADGE CLASS SCHEDULE MAY 2015 1 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Scout Conduct and Expectations Participants are expected to show respect to the Instructor and other members of the class, participate without being disruptive, and obey rules or a parent will need to attend the class with them. Scouts must check in at the front desk and receive a pass before being admitted to class. Please also bring a pen to each class and a blue-card to the last class. A scout must have all of his paperwork, requirements, and projects completed in order to complete the badge. The cost of registration is for instruction and not for a signature on the card. Be careful not to lose or throw away any work, even after you have completed the class. Instructors are only required to keep a record of completion for one year so workbooks become your proof of completion if you lose your blue card. Cancellations If your scout is unable to attend a class that he has registered for, contact the Fitness Center BEFORE the class is held. Once the first class has started, there will not be a transfer or credit available. REGISTERING FOR CLASSSES Register for all classes at afcity.org. Click “Fitness Center”. Click “Register for Activities”. Log in or click on “Register for Activities”. Click “Boy Scouts” and select badges. Note: First cost listed is for AFFC members only. Course Changes All classes are subject to change. We will notify you by email of any changes that are made if you have already registered for a class and it is changed. It is your responsibility to make sure we have a current email so we can notify you. If a class is canceled your money will remain as a credit for a future class. If a class is rescheduled, you will automatically be transferred to the new class and notified of the new dates and time by email. If a class is full, please contact the Fitness Center to have your son’s name put on a waiting list. Please do not ask to be an exception to be included in a class as we cannot make exceptions to the class sizes. All work will be done in class. This is a fun class that will help scouts learn more about different cultures. Before attending class, each scout must attend a festival, celebration, pro-gram, exhibit or other cultural event and be prepared to share something he learned from it. Scouts will learn about American history and cur-rent events. Scouts need to find out about their own family heritage before coming to class. This goes well with Genealogy merit badge. Scouts will learn to successfully use a compound bow, make a bow string and an arrow from a bare shaft, and learn rules for archery safety and safe handling of a bow and arrows. Scouts must be able to pull back a 12 lb. draw weight bow and be willing to follow all instructions. More information coming soon! Scouts will learn what equipment to carry on their backs and what knowledge to have in their heads. The second class will be a 2-5 mile hike with full packs. The homework for this class includes completing THREE backpacking treks and preparing a pictoral report of each trek to present at the last class. Scouts will learn how to weave and complete one project in class. Two projects will need to be com-pleted as homework. Supplies will be handed out in the first class for all projects. Scouts will watch birds and learn to identify them by their characteristics. They will complete one project in class and then they will be required to do one as a homework assignment as well as do a report on a career. Scouts will learn about food-related illnesses and the food groups. They will be required to plan 6 days of meals and find out how much the cost is for food for the 6 meals. Scouts will also need to prepare some meals at home. Part of the cost of the class includes pre-paring some small meals in class. ($4 supply fee included.) *Required for Eagle Scouts will learn the role that everyone plays as part of crime prevention. Homework includes collecting 10 articles on crime/prevention efforts in our area. Scouts need to bring their bike to the second class, ready for inspection, and will do their first 10-mile ride. During the summer, scouts will need to complete six more rides (one 10-mile, two 15mile, two 25-mile, and one 50-mile. Scouts will learn about being a dentist and causes of tooth decay. Scouts should have visited a dentist for a routine checkup before taking this class and be pre-pared to discuss his experience. Scouts need to watch three videos at www.nsteens.org/videos BEFORE coming to class. They will earn the Cyber Chip while working on this badge. (The Programming Merit Badge is very similar.) This class will teach scouts to have an appreciation for those with disabilities. Scouts will visit a place that works with people that have disabilities and observe 2 different locations about the accessibility for people with disabilities. Scouts will learn about dogs and they need to show how to take care and train a dog. They must have a dog or have taken care of a dog for two months. Requirements #4, #5, #8, & #9 must be completed before coming to class. In this class scouts will build a single-pole, double-throw switch and connect it to a light. They will also learn how a home electrical system works. Scouts will learn first aid for electrical-related injuries. Scouts will learn the basic theories and fundamentals of electronics, how to work with electronic components safely, the function of basic components, how to solder and how to draw a schematic. Home-work is a 2-week evaluation of a home’s energy use. Scouts will learn more about the different aspects of engineering and what engineers do. Scouts will spend part of the time outside doing observations so dress accordingly. *Possible Requirement for Eagle Scouts will be required to keep track of chores for 3 months, plan a family project that will benefit their family and do a project with their family. Scouts will learn more about the history of fingerprinting and how it is used for identification. Scouts will fingerprint themselves and learn to analyze their fingerprints. This is a fun, informative class where scouts learn how to be prepared in case of a fire. They will con-duct a home safety survey, conduct a family fire drill, and draw a fire escape plan for their home. The second class will be at the AF Fire Station. Scouts will learn the basics of first aid and CPR. They are required to bring a personal first aid kit and the family first aid kit. Scouts are required to design and produce a printed piece using one of the four printing processes as well as show his knowledge of different types of binding. The second class will be from 4-6 and is a Field Trip to a printing facility. The address will be given during the first class. Scouts must take five 10-mile hikes and one 20-mile hike on six separate days. Plans for each hike must be presented at the first class PRIOR to taking any hikes and must include map routes, clothing, equipment, and food lists. Model Design & Building Dates: Summer 2015 Time: (3 hours of classes) Cost: $12 - $14 Counselor: Michael J. Scouts will need to make two models, not from a kit, as part of their homework. Scouts need to bring a mechanical pencil with lead, eraser, drafting tools (a ruler, triangle, drafting com-pass, and protractor), scaled paper, and a signed blue card to class. Scouts will learn about the court system and what the job entails to be a lawyer. They will also do a mock trial in the class. Scouts will interview a lawyer and/or a police officer in class. Some of the requirements correlate with the Crime Prevention Merit badge. Scouts need to bring an item that is made from real tanned leather to class and they will learn how to recondition it. Do not send anything made from suede. All work will be completed in class and all supplies will be provided. Scouts are required to pass the pre-test (swim 400 yards) during the first class in order to continue this class. If he does not pass the pretest, he will be re-moved from the class and your account will be credited, minus $7 for the pretest. Send an extra change of clothes and a towel. *Possible Required for Eagle Scouts will be studying about different mammals in our area. Homework includes visiting a Natural History Museum OR writing a 500-word report AND complete a project that will influence the numbers of mammals in their area. They must provide their own video or digital cam-era capable of shooting video. The second class will be a field trip to a motion studio. Scouts must make a homemade musical instrument and bring to class. They must also come prepared to perform a musical number of their choice. More information coming soon More information coming soon Scouts will be learning about ocean currents and climates and making a model out of clay in class. They need to come prepared to share a 5-minute speech or a 500-word report on an Oceanography topic. ($2 supply fee included.) Scouts need to provide their own orienteering compass (one with the clear base plate). We will start inside, but the majority of the class will be outside and involves a lot of walking so dress accordingly. The class will finish at the south side of the Cemetery by the Veteran's monument so please pick up your son there. Scouts will learn the proper safety procedures when applying paint and coatings. They will be painting 2 different surfaces. The cost of the class includes a supply fee. Scouts should learn about a career in painting before coming to class. ($5 supply fee included.) Scouts need to be prepared to exercise in each class. They are required to bring a copy of their scout physical to the first class and a note from the Dentist stating that they have been seen in the last 6 months. This class is held every other week for 12 weeks. *Required for Eagle This class will require 3 projects: create a budget and track finances for 13 weeks, track time for one week, and complete a project plan. Please look for a note to come home the first day of class regarding tracking finances. HELD AT KIMBERLY PARK (990 N. 250 W. in AF) Scouts will learn the differences in ropes, splicing, and how to make rope, as well as complete four projects. Scouts will be outside part of the first class and most of the second class so be sure to send a water bottle and sunscreen. Be sure to check out prerequisites for taking this class. ($2 supply fee included.) Each scout will make a list of 10 plants around their home and 5 invasive/non-native plants in their area. The first class will be outside so dress accordingly. Scouts learn about home plumbing systems, plumbing-related tools, and plumbing-related skills, including how to cut and thread a steel pipe and how to clean out a sink trap. ($3 supply fee included.) Scouts will be making three pots out of clay and learn terms related to pottery. Scouts will need to visit a museum between classes. All supplies, including glazing and firing will be included. ($8 Supply Fee included) Scouts will be learning about different diseases and prevention along with treatments. They will be required to interview a Food Service Manager. They will also need to do a report on a career in the Public Health industry. There are several options on homework from building a railroad car model to planning a trip and taking a ride on the railroad. The counselor will discuss these options with Scouts. Most of the requirements for this badge can be completed doing school work, so we will not be offering it as a class. You can go online to www.meritbadge.org and print off the workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Scouts will learn about the protected and unprotected reptiles and amphibians. THEY WILL NEED TO TAKE CARE OF A REPTILE OR AMPHIBIAN FOR AT LEAST A MONTH AND CHART THE CARE TAKEN. Scouts will design, build, and program a robot as part of this fun and interactive class. Scouts need to complete Requirement #3 before coming to class. They will need to visit a scouting exhibit or museum, interview former scouters and make a collection of scouting memorabilia. Scouts will sculpt two figures from clay and create a plaster mold. Scouts will need to learn about careers in sculpture as homework. All supplies are included in the cost of the class. ($8 Supply Fee included.) Scouts will learn more about search and rescue techniques. They must complete the Online Training (ICS-100) before coming to the first class. (This training must be completed in one sitting.) The second class will be at High-land Glen Park where they will do a search and rescue exercise. Scouts will learn about different ways to communicate, including signaling, Morse Code, ASL, semaphore, braille, sound and hand signals. BEFORE CLASS scouts will need to lay out a one-mile trail for their troop with six signs or markings. This class will demonstrate how soil and water shape our world. There are prerequisites to be completed before class so make sure to check registration notes. Scouts will learn about space, why we explore it, and how it benefits mankind. Scouts will build and launch a rocket. The rocket launch will be during the last class and family and friends are welcome to come and watch. (Includes $10 Supply Fee - all supplies included.) Scouts will learn about different types of wood and when each is appropriate for a project, identify different tools used, and how to properly sharpen and care for those tools.
