TECHNICAL APPLICATION NOTE SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI Indicators DEFINITION Receptacle Outlet RESET RESET TEST TEST TEST button TEST MONTHLY TEST MENSUEL RESET button FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS SUIVEZ INSTRUCTION This self-test GFCI receptacle tests itself periodically to confirm the GFCI is operating properly. If the self-test circuitry detects a failure, the GFCI receptacle provides a visual and/or audio indicator to the user to replace the GFCI. This application note details potential indicators and the related necessary actions. Outlet Trip Indicator Light Mounting Bracket INSTALLATION TEST INDICATORS The following describes the indications that can appear when the GFCI is initially installed and connected to power. Status Indicator Light Self Grounding Clip This GFCI is shipped from the factory in the tripped condition and cannot be reset until it is wired correctly and power is supplied to the device. The device has two LED lights. Once installed, either both lights will appear or no light will appear. The chart below details the indicators, the reasons for the indicators, and the action to be taken under these scenarios. STATUS INDICATOR LIGHT TRIP INDICATOR LIGHT ACTION DETAILS Green Amber Manually press the RESET button to power the device. If the GFCI does not RESET, replace GFCI. When powered up, the GFCI will conduct a self-test. The green status indicator confirms that it has passed the self-test. Amber indicates the GFCI is in the tripped state and installed correctly. Off Off Manually press the TEST button. Amber light should come on. Press the RESET button. If the GFCI does not RESET, replace GFCI. 1. GFCI may be wired incorrectly, check for line/load reversal. OR 2. There is no power due to trip at the circuit breaker. STATUS INDICATOR LIGHT TRIP INDICATOR LIGHT ACTION DETAILS Green Off None. GFCI is functioning normally. The GFCI is in the RESET state. Self-test passed. Protected power is available. Green Amber Manually press the RESET button to power the device. If the GFCI does not RESET, replace GFCI. The GFCI is in the tripped state either from the detection of a fault or from a manual trip using the TEST button. When the GFCI is in the tripped state, the self-test no longer conducts a test every 15 minutes (will not test again until reset). While resetting, the Status Indicator will flash several times from red to green for approximately twenty seconds before going to solid green. This is an indication of repeated self-tests being conducted once the GFCI has been reset. Off Amber Replace GFCI. The self-test circuitry is not functioning. Red (blinks) + Beep Off Manually press the TEST button to shut off the beep. Replace GFCI. The self-test circuitry has detected a potential loss of GFCI protection. GFCI needs to be manually tripped to shut off the audible alarm. The GFCI will then prevent reset and needs to be replaced. Red (blinks) Amber Replace GFCI. The self-test circuitry has detected a potential loss of GFCI protection. The GFCI is in the tripped state and will not be providing power to either the GFCI receptacle face or downstream receptacles. The GFCI reset lockout mechanism will prevent reset. The device needs to be replaced. Off Off Manually press the TEST button. Amber light should come on. Press the RESET button. If the GFCI doesn’t reset, Replace GFCI. There is no power due to trip at the circuit breaker OR there is no power available on the circuit. Check circuit breaker to confirm power. If power is confirmed and the GFCI does not reset, the GFCI needs to be replaced. ® SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI Indicators Once the device is installed correctly there are a number of indicators to show different states of the GFCI. The chart below details the indicators, the reasons for the indicators, and the action to be taken under these scenarios. ® NOTE: Although the SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI is designed to perform a self-test every 15 minutes in the RESET state, it is recommended that a manual test be performed every month by pressing the TEST button. If the Amber Trip Indicator Light does not come ON when the TEST button is depressed or if the GFCI cannot be reset, it must be replaced.
