SECTION 01 63 00 - PRODUCT SUBSTITUTIONS
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Comparable Products (Substitutions):
1. Timing: Architect will consider requests for substitution received within 60 days after date
of Owner's Notice to Proceed. Subsequently, requests for substitutions will be considered
or rejected at discretion of Architect, unless a product becomes unavailable due to no fault
of Contractor.
2. Source and Quantity of Substitution Requests: Only one request for substitution submitted
directly from Contractor will be considered for an item; repetitive submittals of the same
item will not be considered. Substitution requests from others, or that contain extraneous
material, or that contain incomplete information will be returned without review. See Section 01600 - Submittal Procedures for additional requirements.
3. Conditions: Contractor must include complete data substantiating compliance of proposed
substitution with requirements of Contract Documents and in sufficient detail to permit
analysis and review by the Architect. Use form at end of this Section to document reason
for request and to include information to permit analysis and review by Architect. When
substitution is not accepted, provide specified material, product, or equipment. If the following conditions are not satisfied, Architect will return the requests without action, except
to record non-compliance with these requirements:
a. Reason for the proposed substitution.
b. Change in Contract Sum and Contract Time, if any, after deducting additional responsibilities Owner must assume. Owner's additional responsibilities may include compensation to Architect for redesign and evaluation services, increased cost of other construction by Owner, and similar considerations.
c. Effect on Construction Progress Schedule and completion date.
d. Changes required in details and construction of related work required due to substitution, including mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
e. Product identification and description.
f. Detailed comparison of significant qualities of proposed substitute item to product, material or equipment item specified. Significant qualities include attributes such as performance, weight, size, durability, visual effect, and specific features and other requirements indicated. Submit test data substantiating performance claims.
g. List of similar installations for completed projects, with project names and addresses,
and with names, addresses and telephone numbers of Owner and architect references
than can confirm similar service use and service history.
h. Samples, if requested.

Substitute item is equivalent or superior to that specified in quality and durability,
design, appearance, function, finish, performance, and of size and weight that will
permit installation in spaces provided and allow adequate service access;
Substitute item is compatible with other portions of the Work;
Substitute item has been coordinated with other portions of the Work;
Substitute item has received necessary approvals from authorities having jurisdiction;
Substitute item is consistent with the Contract Document and will produce the
intended results;
Substitute item provides specified warranty; and

(7). If requested substitution involves more than one contractor, or subcontractor, requested substitution has been coordinated with other portions of the Work, is uniform and consistent, is compatible with other products, and is acceptable to all
contractor, or subcontractors involved.
j. Name and address of maintenance service, and source of replacement materials,
where applicable for requested substitute item.
k. Change in warranty requirements, if any, including change in warranty for system that
requested substitute item is a part.
l. Additional information as requested.
4. The Architect will review each request for substitution from Contractor and will determine
equivalency or superiority of proposed substitution. Do not purchase or install substitute
materials and products without written acceptance of the substitution by Architect. Architect will notify Contractor of acceptance or rejection in writing within a reasonable time.
Acceptance of each request substitution will only be made by written Change Order to the
Contract Documents.
