PURPOSE

This course aims to develop the language and communication skills that are essential for the workplace. These include:

♦ a knowledge and understanding of the communication process developing skills to communicate effectively in both spoken and written communication developing skills to participate effectively in groups developing skills to read and research effectively job application skills

CONTENT

The course will address the following topics at an appropriate level:

Theoretical aspects of communication as applicable to engineers

Listening and speaking skills

Inter-cultural communication skills

Treaty aspects applicable to communication in the New Zealand workplace

Writing and research skills

Principles of group dynamics and teamwork

The process of applying for an engineering job and preparing for the interview

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to :

1 Demonstrate awareness of bi cultural and multicultural work environments

The application of these principles to a business environment are researched.

2 Write memos, email and letters in the appropriate New Zealand style

The writing of emails, memos and letters is practiced.

3 Write simple reports with logical structure and correct format

A correctly formatted report is prepared.

Demonstrate an understanding of group dynamics through teamwork

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The Generic capabilities are assessed formally through written work and formatively through class activities. Students are expected to behave in a professional manner at all times, to be culturally sensitive in their interactions with other people. All work submitted for marking that was performed in an uncontrolled assessment environment is accompanied with a cover sheet declaring that this is the students own work.

The course is achievement based

There are five summative assessments and one formative assessment for this course.

The Generic capabilities are assessed formally through written work and formatively through class activities.
