Built to Protect. INTRODUCTION Hubbell Vaults – the preferred alternative Providing the protection you depend on for transformers and power cables, Hubbell Underground Vaults can be buried flush with the ground where they’re literally out of sight. Dramatically improving the appearance of the surrounding landscape, Hubbell Vaults are conveniently lightweight but strong enough to meet ANSI TIER rating requirements. They can be used as a pad for single-phase transformers and a variety of load-break junctions. Hubbell’s designs ensure freedom from rust and corrosion in all environments. Our unique technology enables us to construct vault enclosures with an unequaled blend of strength, durability, and ease of installation. We offer multiple sizes for both four-way and six-way switchgear. Designed To Be Superior Lightweight - Hubbell Underground Distribution Switchgear FRP Vaults weigh just 4,000 pounds. Compare that to traditional concrete enclosures, which are incredibly heavy and can weigh as much as 20 times more. The greatly reduced weight means considerable savings on labor, time, and expense. SWITCHGEAR ENCLOSURES Strength – Hubbell Vaults boast compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths three to five times higher than traditional concrete. Cost Savings - Unlike much heavier concrete models, Hubbell Vaults can be set with excavation equipment already on site. Less Red Tape - No special transportation permits are required. Fewer Headaches - No cranes are required for installation or access. Cover Options - There are multiple easy-access cover openings available including torsion, polymer concrete, or ultra-lightweight composite covers. Torsion covers open to 180 degrees for ease of access. Additional Options - These may include composite work and switchgear platforms, composite ladders, racking, terminators, and pulling eyes. Page 4 | April 2011 Installation 1 Site Selection Select an appropriate site or location that is suitable for a Vault. Site features to consider prior to final selection include: o Utility easements o Streets o Parking lots o Parking lot entrances o Shipping and delivery docks o Waste-removal containers (dumpsters) Attach nylon straps or chains to the lifting bolts. 2 Conduits and Piping Preparation • Trench and/or plow conduit. • Bore under road crossings & railroads. • Mark the depth of conduit using marker tape. 3 Excavate • Excavate approximately 1-2 feet longer and wider than the Vault, and 6-8 inches deeper than the depth of the Vault. • Add a rodent barrier if necessary. Lift and position enclosure with backhoe. CONTINUED . . . Page 5 | April 2011 INSTALLATION Guidelines for installing Hubbell Vaults may vary depending on size, location, and environmental factors. Hubbell Vaults are designed for non-deliberate traffic areas only. Install Vaults by following four simple steps. Install and Protect INSTALLATION Environmental factors should always be considered when installing enclosures of all sizes. Local conditions could dictate additions during installation, such as Concrete Collars or Internal Bracing. These additions provide security, support, and protection. 4 Placement • Remove Vault from the pallet to prepare for placement. • Place nylon straps or chains around the lifting bolts and secure it to the backhoe bucket. The angle between the strap and the Vault should not be less than 45 degrees. • Lift the Vault and place it into the hole. • Place gravel in the Vault and around the side if necessary. • Lift the Vault to the proper elevation, allowing gravel to run out under the Vault. • Check the Vault’s elevation with a level and range pole, and make the necessary adjustments with the backhoe bucket. • Once the Vault is set to the proper elevation, reinstall the covers, and back fill. • If 95% compaction is required, internal bracing should be used on all manufacturers’ Vaults to prevent deflection and damage. Place gravel in the enclosure and around the side. Lift enclosure to let gravel run underneath.
