NOTIFICATION OF TESTING OF STANDBY EMERGENCY GENERATOR
AT QMC HOSPITAL CAMPUS
Why are we testing the generators?
To mitigate against the risk of a total electrical failure within the Hospital it is a Department of
Health requirement, written in Health Technical Memorandum HTM 06-01 to undertake regular
frequent standby generator testing.
Regular systematic standby generator testing ensures that both the generators and the entire
standby electrical supply system [the system includes sensing devices; changeover; contactors;
cabling; controls etc.] are working properly. In addition, these planned full system load tests also
improve staff awareness, understanding and contingency planning in the event of future
unplanned electricity power outages. When and where are we doing the tests:Standby Emergency Generator Test is planned for: Tuesday 25th March 2014 West Block

What will happen?
At the start there will be a short interruption to the electricity supply, of up to thirty seconds, until
the generators start. Thereafter ONLY essential electrical supply to your ward or department
will be supplied by the generators for the duration of the test. At the end of the test there will be
a few seconds interruption to the electricity supply when mains supply is restored.
It is important that before the test occurs, you have identified ALL your essential power
sockets and that your critical medical equipment is plugged into the essential supply.
If you are uncertain about the location of your essential power supply, please contact
Gareth Jones, Engineering Manager on extension 66758 for further assistance.
Please ensure that each member of your department is aware of the above dates and times as
electro-medical and ICT computing equipment could be affected.
Note: After both electrical interruptions [start/end] appropriate action should be taken by
your operators to check the operational setting of all electro-medical equipment.

There is a very small risk that the power will not automatically switch to the generator supply in
the “thirty second window” described above, so please ensure that you know your own areas
contingency plans to deal with a power failure situation.
