2013-2014 Final Grade Calculations for High School Students The purpose of this message is to inform you of how grades will be calculated in high school classes this year. These rules apply to all students including middle school students taking high school courses. • Most grades are calculated on a semester basis. A student will earn 0.5 credit for each passing grade earned in a semester long high school class. • Each semester contains two quarters and one mid-term or final exam EXCEPTIONS: • High school courses taught in the middle school, which are considered full-year courses, will be calculated as a full-year final grade. • Courses requiring an End-of-Course assessment are also full-year grade calculation A semester grade is calculated using the following values. To calculate the final semester grade, each quarter’s letter grade is converted to points and doubled and the exam letter grade is converted to points. The numbers are added together to determine the total points earned. Letter Grade Quality Points earned per letter grade 4 3 2 1 0 A B C D F Quarter (counts twice) Exam (counts once) Total Points Earned 8 6 4 2 0 4 3 2 1 0 18-20 13-17 8-12 5-7 0-4 EXAMPLES: Letter Grade Earned Points Earned Letter Grade Earned Points Earned Quarter Quarter Exam (mid-term or final exam) B C D 3 (grade counts twice) 2 (grade counts twice) 1 (grade counts once) Quarter Quarter Exam (mid-term or final exam) D C F 1 (grade counts twice) 2 (grade counts twice) 0 (grade counts twice) Total Points Earned Final Letter Grade 6 + 4 + 1 = 11 C Total Points Earned Final Letter Grade 2+4+0=6 D In limited situations, a year-long grade will be calculated by combining the grades earned during the two semesters. • Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) will combine two semesters to earn a passing grade only if one of the final grades for a semester is an F. o If one of the final grades for the semester is F, the total quality points earned for the year must be at least ten (10) to earn a passing grade for the year. o At least one quality point must be earned in each semester. o If one of the final grades for the semester is F, and the two semesters are combined, the following scale will be used to determine the grade for the year: C D F 15-24 points 10-14 points 0-9 points In high school courses where a state End-of-Course (EOC) exam is given, the EOC score will be used as the final exam grade. (Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, and U.S. History or equivalent courses) In addition, the results of the End-of-Course (EOC) exam will count as your final exam grade. The proficiency levels will be converted to letter grades in the following manner: EOC Conversion EOC Letter Grade Proficiency Conversion Level Level 5 A Level 4 B Level 3 C Level 2 D Level 1 F The following outlines how the EOC will be calculated by subject area and cohort (school year student entered ninth grade): Algebra 1 2010-2011 cohort • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade 2011-2012 cohort • Must pass EOC to earn credit in Algebra 1 • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2012-2013 cohort • Must pass EOC to earn credit in Algebra 1 • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2013-2014 cohort (including current middle school students) and beyond • Must pass the EOC to receive a high school diploma • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade Biology 1 2010-2011 cohort • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2011-2012 cohort • Must take the Biology 1 EOC • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2012-2013 cohort • Must take the Biology 1 EOC • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2013-2014 cohort and beyond • Must take the Biology 1 EOC • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade Geometry 2010-2011 cohort • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2011-2012 cohort • Must take the Geometry EOC • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2012-2013 cohort • Must take the Geometry EOC • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2013-2014 cohort and beyond • Must take the Geometry EOC • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade US History 2010-2011 cohort • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2011-2012 cohort • EOC is calculated as 10% of final year-long course grade 2012-2013 cohort • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade 2013-2014 cohort and beyond • EOC is calculated as 30% of final year-long course grade CCPS will calculate a year-long grade for students in classes with a state End-of-Course exam. For students in those grades and classes, the final, year-long grade is calculated as follows: EXAMPLE of EOC as 30% of final year-long course grade: Semester 1 Letter Grade Earned Points Earned Points Earned *Weighted Total Points Earned Semester 2 Quarter 1 15% Quarter 2 15% Exam 10% Quarter 3 15% Quarter 4 15% EOC 30% B C F C D C 3 2 0 2 1 2 3x.15 = .45 2x.15 = .30 0x.10 = .0 2x.15 = .30 1x.15 = .15 2x.30 = .6 .45 + .30 +.00 = .75 .30 + .15 = .45 Final Grade .6 1.8 = C Total Points and Final Grade Conversion 3.5 and above 2.5 to 3.499 1.5 to 2.499 1.0 to 1.499 .50 to .999 A B C D F EXAMPLE of EOC as 10% of final year-long course grade: Semester 1 Letter Grade Earned Points Earned Points Earned: Grade counts twice Semester 2 Quarter 1 20% Quarter 2 20% Exam 10% Quarter 3 20% Quarter 4 20% EOC 10% B C F C D C 3 2 0 2 1 2 6 4 0 4 2 2 18 Points Final Grade =C Letter Grade A B C D F Points 35-40 25-34 15-24 10-14 0-9 Grade Calculation for Year Long Classes: • The Florida Department of Education reports Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, and U.S. History End-of-Course exam results as proficiency level of 1 to 5. Exam proficiency scores of Level 3, Level 4 or Level 5 may be used to exempt the student from the course and allow them to earn credit. If you have questions about your grade in a class, you should first ask your teacher for clarification. If you still have questions, please see your school counselor.
