purpose:
This unit standard is designed for people working or
intending to work as a welding inspector. People credited
with this unit standard are able to: prepare plan and establish
conditions for inspection of welded product; verify and test
welded fabrication; and review and report on welded product.
entry information:
Prerequisite: This unit standard is restricted for safety
reasons to entry by people who currently hold welding
inspector certification from the Certification Board for
Inspection Personnel (CBIP).
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A national moderation system of local networks has been
established by the NZ Engineering, Food and Manufacturing
Industry Training Organisation.

Definitions
Enterprise procedure is the documented procedures for
the inspection and verification of welded fabrications;
Specifications includes customer requirements;
Plan is the procedures developed to enable the
inspection to be carried out in a logical and safe
manner;
Contract includes customer instructions and the
requirements of standards, codes, and specifications;
Welding requirements may include preheat, interpass,
and post weld heat treatment (PWHT).

All work practices must meet recognised codes of
practice (or documented worksite safety procedures
where these exceed code, regulatory requirements) for
safety of personnel, product and worksite, and must
meet the obligations required under current legislation.

Acts, Regulations, and By-Laws regarding the handling
of toxic materials and waste are to be complied with.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is
not limited to the: Health and Safety in Employment Act
1992, and its subsequent amendments.

This unit standard covers new work, modifications, and
repairs.

Plan is prepared for inspection requirements in accordance with the contract
and enterprise procedure.
1.2
Specifications for work are identified in accordance with the contract and
enterprise procedure.
1.3
Materials, consumables, and equipment for work are verified in accordance with
the contract and enterprise procedure.
1.4
Welder qualification and welding procedures are confirmed in accordance with
the contract and enterprise procedure.
1.5
Pre-weld inspection is verified in accordance with the contract and enterprise
procedure.
Range:
equipment, joint preparation and fit-up, consumable conditioning,
pre-heat, heat treatment, surface treatment, destructive and non
destructive testing, inspection frequency, inspection and test
plans, material identification and traceability, pressure testing, final
inspection.
