Self-reclosing systems operate under: • Earth leakage current (differential) • Earth leakage current (differential) + overload and short-circuit (overload) Elements comprising a self-reclosing system TRANSFORMER RELAY Signal management + measuring and trip BREAKING DEVICE Monitored Earth leakage transformer The earth leakage transformer detects the earth leakage current. This can be placed inside or outside the relay. Self-reclosing relay Self-reclosing relays offer additional benefits (automatic self-reclosing, overload or short-circuit protection), to the reliability and safety shown by U Series earth leakage protection. Its functions are: • Fault detection (earth leakage or overload) via a signal generated by the transducer • Analyses if this fault should generated an alarm, with regard to the different preset parameters • Operates with a power device which connects – disconnects the load from the system P2-3 P.2 Breaking device Earth leakage and overload/short circuit protection systems with self-reclosing The breaking element always operates as a power switch. It supports the line power to be protected and is external to the relay. The indications are made in the same relay (LED) and as an option they can be done using auxiliary contacts. Rated tripping point of the protection Typical values: Earth leakage protection 30 mA – 3 A Overload protection 6 A – 63 A. Timing (delay) for connection Minimum time which the earth leakage must last to cause the relay to trip. Typical values. 20 ms – 1 s Relay power supply and tolerance The self-reclosing relays require a permanent auxiliary power supply to be able to manage the automatic self-reclosing. Standard value: 230 V ac (± 15 %) Optional 48 V ac, 110 V ac, 400 V ac. Time between reclosures This is the time the relay takes from the trip to the reclosing. This time can be lineal or exponential. Output relay Number of relays With sealing NO or NC output contact Number of reclosures differentiating the type / number Each relay allows a maximum number of closures before being sealed. This counter will beautomatically put to zero if the number of maximum reclosures has not been exceeded during a preset time (return to zero time of the reclosing counters). This number will be different depending on the type of reclosing. Return to zero time for the reclosing counters In order to avoid accumulations of trips which do not belong to the same fault, a return to zero time for the reclosing counters is set. This time restarts after each reclosing whenever the maximum number of reclosures is not exceeded. Example: The WRU 25 RA relay has a maximum number of reclosures of six before being sealed. In an installation where the transient earth leakage fault lasts for 50 s, the relay will trip 4 times and will reclose 3 times (8 s + 16 s + 30 s). While the third reclosing is being timed, the fault disappears, so the relay will stay on ON. At this time the counter of reclosures returns to zero. The RESET option restarts the relay returning the reclosing counters to zero. On site Test and Reset (using the keypad) and remote The automatic earth leakage reclosing relays offer the same benefits as the U series earth leakage protection.Very important possibility to check the proper operation using TEST and RESET on the keypad and remotely through the specific inputs. The test is interpreted by the relay as an external leak, reconnecting after a certain time and increase the internal reclosing counter. The reset option restarts the relay, returning in the reclosing counters to zero. P2-5 P.2 Earth leakage and overload/short circuit protection systems with self-reclosing Earth leakage protection and self-reclosing EARTH LEAKAGE PROTECTION WITH AUTOMATIC SELF-RECLOSING-REC In most of the cases (95 %), when your earth leakage protection is tripped, a simple manual reclosing solves the problem because there is no permanent leakage.
