Lipetsk State Technical University The University today L Anatoly K.Pogodaev - Rector, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Rector’s Speech (September 2, 2013) University is a source of knowledge, humanity, spirituality Panorama of the University ipetsk State Technical University (LSTU) is one of the leading educational institutions of the Central Black-Earth region of the Russian Federation. Established in 1956 as the Evening faculty of Tula Mechanical Institute, the first and only technical university in the region began its history with training specialists majoring in: - Technology of mechanical engineering, metalcutting machines and tools; - Machinery and technology of foundry. The number of students was then 125. In 1959 the Evening faculty was reorganized into the Lipetsk evening faculty of Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, and in 1966 it was reorganized into the Lipetsk branch of the Institute. In 1973, the branch became Lipetsk Polytechnic Institute, comprising four faculties that trained engineers majoring in 14 fields. In 1994 the institute obtained the status of a technical university. Currently LSTU is a diversified university training specialists for the metallurgical, machine building, chemical and other industries, as well as for academic, university and industrial science. Today LSTU is the only state technical university in the Lipetsk region, entirely complying with modern educational standards. It comprises 8 faculties and 2 institutes. There are 44 departments in the university. More than 7000, students study here. The educational process at the University is conducted in accordance with the State Educational Standard of Higher Professional Education, adopted in the Russian Federation. Currently, the university has created and successfully implemented a multilevel system of educational programs for bachelors and masters. Lipetsk State Technical University The University today is implementing basic educational programs of higher education in 65 directions of training, including 31 directions of training bachelors, 7 directions of training masters, 4 specialist programs, 3 programs of additional professional education according to the profile of the university. The high quality of educational activities is provided by about 550 teachers, including 60 doctors and 290 candidates of science, 27 full members and 10 corresponding members of various academies, both Russian and foreign. The university provides postgraduate and doctoral studies in 9 branches of science, within which 36 programs of post-graduate education are on offer. 65 doctors and professors are supervising the post-graduates. Since its establishment, LSTU has paid a lot of attention to scientific research, which is predetermined by the development objectives of our city and region. Therefore, the principal directions in the university’s research work have been metallurgy and mechanical engineering, the industrial base for which has been Novolipetsk Steel. The university’s scientists have developed and then implemented in production hundreds of momentous technical solutions. Here are only some of them: - a technology of sinter production, now used in the USA and Japan; - the creation of mechanical stepless automatic transmissions for traction and transport vehicles; - a method of integrated assessment of environmental qualities of motor vehicles and internal combustion engines; - development of real systems simulating the operation of large industrial structures. These contacts are also realized at the university which is closely related to the industrial complexes of the city. For instance, in 2003 an agreement was signed on cooperation in technology and the management of small and medium machine-building enterprises of the Lipetsk region through the establishment of a starting center taking into account the experience of «Mechano» service center (Italy). LSTU has for many years cooperated with the Indesit Corporation, which produces refrigerators and washing machines in Lipetsk. Another important project in the framework of international cooperation is the «Tempus-Tacis», whose aim is to improve the qualification of RF transport workers. The volume of fundamental and applied research per unit of teaching staff reached 131.33 thousand rubles in 2012, which is 2.6 times greater than the accreditation indicators of the University. The number of published monographs per 100 professors and teachers was 7.8 at the threshold value of 2. The number of published textbooks per 100 professors and teachers was 7.4 with the required 0.5. The number of branches of science within which research projects are fulfilled equals 15, whereas it was sufficient to have 5 to confirm the status of the university. In 2012 LSTU won the competition on the support program for students’ associations. The total volume of finance amounted to 100,000 thousand roubles. Much attention is paid to the development of innovative teaching methods based on information technologies. LSTU comprises the IT Department, The University today which is responsible for the development and introduction of software in the educational process and scientific and research activities. The features of today’s university are: - its intranet allowing the students and teachers access to the Internet; - the electronic library with access to book funds of electronic educational and scientific literature; -the Federation of Internet education’s regional centre; - the library with the book fund of about 900 units; the library serves about 23 thousand readers a year; - the publishing house with modern equipment publishing more than 200 titles of scientific and educational literature a year. There are more than 25 administrative, utility, industrial and financial divisions, public organizations, including the Centre for industrial safety examination and certification of quality of building production, the Centre for power savings and advanced power engineering technologies, the Labour safety centre, the Academic scientific and creative centre of the Russian academy of architecture and construction sciences. Great attention is given to cultural and educational work with students. The department of social work, the student’s club «Gelios», the sports club, the museum of history of the university, the students theatre «Zong», the newspaper «Politekhnik» work here for this purpose. The university is a complex of 15 buildings with classrooms and laboratories, including two buildings with gyms and a pool, sportsgrounds, two hostels, a recreation camp. Modern metallurgical manufacture is a huge technological and scientific complex demanding experts in various fields: engineers in foundry, thermal physics, technology, chemical-analysis, welding, etc. It must be remembered that Lipetsk is first of all a city of metallurgists, whose effective work defines the level of life in the city and the region. For this reason the metallurgical institute of our university has been the leader, forming the future personnel structure of the numerous enterprises of our region. The metallurgical institute trains students in: - Metallurgy; Technological machinery and equipment; Chemistry; Chemical engineering. Graduates of the metallurgical institute work in various spheres of national economy, business, education. The research and design organizations, metallurgical and machine-building factories become the main objects of labour activity for them. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE T he mechanical engineering institute was founded in 2012 on the basis of the mechanical engineering faculty, one of the oldest faculties of LSTU, which was founded in 1965. Today the institute comprises the departments of: - Mechanical engineering technology; Theoretical mechanics; Mechanics of plastic forming; Design and artistic processing of materials; Engineering graphics. These are the laboratories of: press-forging equipment, robotics, machines’ reliability and repair, metrology and standardization, metal-cutting machines of various types, plastic forming, engineering graphics, computer science. Around 600 students study at the institute, of whom more than 100 are trained according to specialized programs for the graduates of the metallurgical, machine building, and construction colleges of Lipetsk. The institute provides conditions for students’ research work: the “Step to the future” program, students’ scientific conferences, participation in regional, Russian and international projects, taking up post-graduate courses. Kotsar and I.M. Sharshakov. At present its staff includes 114 lecturers and workers, among whom are 10 professors and 48 associate professors. Much attention has always been paid to the development of scientific research and the introduction of innovative educational technologies. This results in numerous grants of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and of other foundations, research performed within the framework of various firms dealing with innovative technologies. For a long time the scientists of the faculty participated in the fulfillment of the federal program “Integration of Science and Higher Education of Russia”. The concentration of strength for training specialists in physical technologies was stipulated by the creation of the Physics and Technology Center in LSTU – the result of cooperation of the university, Novolipetsk Steel, and the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The faculty trains bachelors and masters in metallurgy, material studies and materials technologies, heat power engineering and heat engineering, nanoengineering, mechanics and mathematical modeling, system analysis and control, biotechnical systems and technologies. The faculty maintains lasting relations with numerous enterprises, institutes, and organizations both in Russia and abroad. TRANSPORT ENGINEERING FACULTY T he transport engineering faculty has provided the training of specialists in the sphere of the transport complex since 1972. It is one the largest faculties of LSTU with the total number of students of around 800. At present the faculty is formed by the following departments: “Vehicles and Technospheric Safety”, “Road Transport Management”, “Transport Organization”, “Applied Mechanics”. The faculty trains multifunctional specialists capable of developing competitive machines, managing and controlling activities in surface transport operation, providing road safety. Students are trained in: - Dean of the transport engineering faculty, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor S.A. The facilities of the faculty include 4 computer classrooms, 12 specialized laboratories, 7 specialized classrooms. It was founded in 1988. The faculty trains specialists in the sphere of design and implementation of information systems in production and business, creation of automated electric drives, application of electric energy in economy. Shpiganovich is the chairman of a doctoral dissertation council of the university, where candidate’s and doctoral dissertations are regularly defended. CONSTRUCTION FACULTY The construction faculty was founded in 1966. Throughout its existence more than 3000 construction engineers have been trained here. Today the faculty trains specialists in the sphere of construction, which is one of the most steadily developing industries, providing the creation of a comfortable environment for people and triggering the development of a number of related branches of material production. Engineers are trained at the following departments: - Architecture; Metal constructions; Construction materials; Strength of materials; Construction production. The faculty is among the most popular ones in LSTU, which is not surprising, because the career of a builder has always been respected and honored. Graduates major in: - “Management of organization” (“Financial management”, “Strategic management”). The educational program provides the training of efficient and highly cultured specialists who can work in any sphere of management; - “Accounting, analysis and audit”. Graduates are qualified as “economists”. Their professional activity is in demand in all spheres of the national economy. Graduates can work as accountants, economists, financial managers, consultants, experts, auditors; - “Economy and management at the enterprise (in metallurgy)”. Graduates are qualified as “economist-managers”. Professionally they are in demand at enterprises of different business forms, in banks, tax inspectorates and financial organizations. Today six (6) Doctors of Economics, six (6) professors, thirty (30) candidates of science lecture at the faculty of economics. There are postgraduate courses in “Economic theory” and “Economics and national economy management”. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL STUDIES T he faculty is one of the youngest at the University. It was founded in October 1997 being separated from the faculty of economics and law. The faculty includes the following departments: - department of culture; - department of sociology; - department of psychology; - department of philosophy; - department of foreign languages; - department of criminal law, criminal procedure and criminology; - department of history, state law and constitutional law; - department of civil law, civil and arbitration procedure. Traditionally the faculty trains specialists in the following fields: “Law”, “Psychology” and “Sociology”. Since 2006 the faculty has enrolled students to major in “Human Resource Management” and “Advertising and public relations”, which were started due to economic and socio-cultural changes in Russian society. Since 2002 the department of foreign languages, which is a part of the faculty, has been training specialists to qualify as the “Translator in the sphere of professional communication”. The power of intellectual and creative energy of students is used in intensive creative and scientific activities. The students of the faculty have won diplomas and prizes at: the All-Russian competition “My legislative initiative” conducted by State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the RF, II Scientific and Informational Congress of the Kingdom of Thailand, the annual All-Russian Olympiad of the scientific and students’ papers in the sphere of drug prevention and drug crime, the VIII International Moscow show “Innovation and Investment”, etc. The faculty is famous for holding competitions, subject olympiads, large-scale festivals and unusual shows, in which the faculty has repeatedly taken the top places. The faculty has reliable creative links with many Russian enterprises, institutions and organizations and is actively developing international relationships. Ivannikov Beginning of an academic year at the extramural faculty In the classroom Students working on their diplomas he history of the extramural faculty (until recently it was called the “evening” faculty) is the history of establishing higher technical education in Lipetsk; it is the history of formation of the personnel with their traditions; it is the history of scientific schools’ formation and development. It was the Extramural faculty which gave origin to our University. Initially the Evening faculty was founded in 1956 (at that time it was a faculty of Tula mechanical institute). In 1959 the Evening faculty of Moscow Institute of Steel was founded in Lipetsk. In 1966 the Evening faculty was reorganized into the Lipetsk branch of Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys. In 1972 on the basis of the Lipetsk branch of Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys Lipetsk Polytechnical Institute was organized. Its structure, along with the faculties of full-time tuition, included its own Evening faculty. In 1998 this Evening faculty was renamed into the extramural faculty. Over its 50 years’ history the extramural faculty has trained more than 9,000 engineers and highly educated specialists. Graduating students of the faculty went a long way for developing the industrial plants and construction industry of Lipetsk and the Lipetsk region. Today 2,150 students are being trained at the extramural faculty. The training is realized by 275 lecturers from 39 departments, including 38 professors and doctors of sciences, 135 associate professors and candidates of sciences. The faculty’s pride is its graduates – the President of International Metallurgist Union, USSR Minister of Metallurgy S.V. Kolpakov; the President of Russian metal production exporters Union, distinguished metallurgist of the RSFSR, academician of the Russian Engineering Academy, the three-times-laureate of the USSR State Prize and the RF State Prize S.Z. Afonin; mayor of Lipetsk M.V. Gulevsky and hundreds of distinguished Russian citizens. Students’ life T he students are the main heroes of the university community. That is why the educational process in LSTU is based on carefulness and thoroughness in future specialists’ training with the support of the latest achievements in fundamental sciences, on the implementation of advanced educational technologies, on the development of personal qualities of young specialists. Students’ research activity is the main component of the university’s research. Younger students are involved in scientific research as members of students’ scientific communities, which are organized at many departments of the University. Students’ scientific conferences, competitions in different subjects, creative contests and festivals are organized at the University annually. The LSTU students win medals and diplomas of Russian and international scientific forums. Today LSTU has an effective student government. The student government was established in 1998, it has its own regulations and closely cooperates with the LSTU authorities. In general, student government regulates students’ taking part in the administration and organization of the educational process; speaks for the students at different levels; helps the University authorities to ensure the quality control of specialists’ training; takes part in the organization of cultural events. Since 1975 LSTU has had students’ club “Gelios”. Over the years “Gelios” became the cultural centre not just of our University but of our city. The cultural events organized by “Gelios” are so popular that all young people of Lipetsk dream of attending them. In the past years there have appeared new forms of cultural and educational work – “Knowledge Day”, students’ feast «Tatyana’s Day», a contest of beauty, grace and charm, theatrical performances for graduates “Good luck!”. The creative teams and leaders of students’ club are winners of regional festivals “Students’ Spring”, “Тheater Spring”, “Students’ Summer”. A wonderful singer Yekaterina Shavina (Physics and Technology Faculty) in May 2009 became the winner of the regional festival of young leaders “To lead!” Good conditions are created at the University for work of the students’ club – the assembly hall for 1,100 people, rehearsal rooms, spacious storage spaces for costumes and equipment. The Zong theatre has its own auditorium with 100 seats. The Polytechnik sport club jointly with the department of physical training has organized 27 groups in 14 sports with more than 500 young people in them. Mass competitions are held in many sports with all university students taking part in them. The LSTU basketball team is the permanent winner of regional competitions, the table tennis team is the 2009 champion of the Lipetsk region, power sports athletes annually join the ranks of the Russian masters of sports. For this there are sports buildings with two game rooms, three gyms, a swimming pool of 16×25 m2, as well as open sports facilities with an area of 1570 square meters. Students’ life The Students’ Council of the hostel solves its specific problems: controls sanitary conditions in rooms, considers emerging conflicts and takes necessary measures of influence. Following the initiative of the Council, the hostel was equipped with six halls for sports activities; track and field, wrestling, board games (tennis) groups started to work, and a computer room opened. One hall is used for holding cultural and mass events. All students from other towns and villages have the opportunity to live in the hostel. Students’ union represents the interests of the students, it helps students with employment in the summer and vacation time, provides legal assistance, organizes internships abroad, actively promotes cultural and sports life of the students. Students’ trade union committee of the university uniting 98.87% of their total number is the initiator and the main organizer of the regional festival of students’ sports and health, the festival of creativity and sport, contest for the best teacher “Sages”, as well as subbotniks, trips and excursions. An important element in ensuring social care for the students is the LSTU catering complex. It consists of a canteen for 500 people, a cafe, two smaller canteens and a confectionery shop.
