Backup and Restore

Problem

A supplement to the user guide is needed for the process to back up and restore the Avocent® Universal

Management Gateway appliance.

Solution

An administrator can create a backup image of the appliance's firmware and configuration. No changes should be made to the configuration during image creation . Upon completion, the appliance will reboot. The backup image resides in the appliance, but must be downloaded before it can be used for restoration using the "Booting from Network" procedure.

To back up the firmware and configuration of the appliance:

1.

Log in to the appliance with the admin account credentials (default admin / admin ).

2.

Click Administration – Firmware , enter the name of the image and click Create Backup Image .

The following screenshot shows the results after the backup is complete.

To restore the firmware and configuration of the appliance:

1.

Log in to the appliance with the admin account credentials (default admin / admin ).

2.

Click Administration – Firmware , select the backup image and click Download Image.

The appliance supports reloading configuration via network boot. This will overwrite all existing configuration settings stored on the appliance's hard drives . The Netboot procedure can be performed via the serial setup port or the VGA console (recommended).

To perform the Netboot procedure:

1.

Reboot the appliance and interrupt the boot menu by pressing the Up or Down Arrow keys.

2.

Select the option for Netboot Recovery.

3.

To cause the appliance to request a DHCP address via eth0, enter udhcpc .

4.

If a static IP needs to be assigned to either eth0 or eth1, enter the following command:

NETBOOT> ifconfig eth<x> <IP address>

NETBOOT> route add default gw <gateway_ip> eth<x> ping <ftp_server>

To confirm network connectivity to FTP server:

After the appliance has been assigned an IP [and optional gateway], enter the following command to download the firmware:

NETBOOT> nboot ftp://<username>:<password>@<ftp server>/<path/filename>
