Classification Health Studies > First Aid Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard together with unit standard 26551, Provide first aid for life threatening conditions, meets the minimum standards requirement for a workplace first aider. Programmes designed to meet the minimum requirements for persons to be certified as first aiders in the workplace will also need to take into account the Department of Labour guidelines and meet New Zealand Qualifications Authority requirements. The primary reference used during the assessment process must be cited on the assessment material. 7 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 8 Range for common first aid conditions: • injuries – fractures, wounds, burns, soft tissue injuries; • medical conditions – seizures, diabetic emergencies, breathing difficulties; anaphylaxis, chest pains, stroke; • for each first aid condition, three signs and/or symptoms, one response to the condition, and an example of when help should be sought must be given; • for each injury, at least two pieces of first aid equipment that would be relevant to the condition must also be identified. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify common first aid conditions. Evidence requirements 1.1 The identification of common first aid conditions is in accordance with the primary reference. Outcome 2 Describe common first aid conditions and how to respond to them. This unit standard is expiring Evidence requirements 2.1 The description of common first aid conditions and the response to them is in accordance with the primary reference. 2.2 The description of when help should be called is in accordance with the primary reference and New Zealand emergency services guidance. 2.3 The description of first aid equipment used to treat the injuries is in accordance with Department of Labour guidelines.
