TECHNOLOGY DIVISION GMASEP AU T OM O T I V E T E C H N O L O G Y Tuning up for today’s vehicles General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) prepares students as state-of-the-art technicians for GM dealerships. A new generation of high tech automotive technology demands a new generation of automotive service technicians. Students are trained on all current General Motors products and components. The latest diagnostic and servicing procedures and equipment are used. This program is certified in the eight categories of automotive repair by the Automotive Service Excellence/National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (ASE/NATEF). The complete program is available only at the Harrisburg Campus. Joel Kintzler of Ephrata took HACC’s GMASEP Program. This is an option in which students specifically train to be technicians for General Motors dealerships. Kintzler first earned credits in HACC’s College in the High School program while at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. AU T OM O T I V E TECHNOLOGY Tuning up for today’s vehicles He is convinced entering the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) and certifying in eight categories of repair by the Automotive Service Excellence/National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation “is the best thing I could have done.” The Jones dealership is high on the program. Four HACC students are expected to work there next year, says Don Lookenbill of Lititz, service director at Jones for more than 25 years. Lookenbill calls the HACC–GM partnership “a great start for young people who reach skill levels after two years that 20-year veterans can’t touch.” GENERAL MOTORS ASEP The General Motors ASEP requires 68 credit hours for a degree. While the requirements are generally the same as in Automotive Technology, differences do exist, such as: 22 credit hours of general education calling for specific electives such as culture and the arts, sociology, physical science and business 43 credit hours in the major are GM specific 3 credit hours of applied math HACC students receive millions of dollars in financial aid annually. Other career opportunities such as service advisor, warranty administrator, shop foreperson, or service manager can also be pursued. This curriculum is designed to prepare students to: Work as service technicians in General Motors dealerships Perform all services and repairs on General Motors vehicles Complete the eight ASE examinations(with ASEP experience of two years) Complete the Pennsylvania Safety Inspection License examination Write and speak effectively Appreciate accomplishments in the arts and sciences ENROLL WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL Those seeking a head start while in high school can look into HACC’s College in the High School program. “Students can earn up to 12 college credits at a reduced rate per course at many high schools and vocational-technical schools in HACC’s service area,” said Ross Berger, director of Tech Prep and Secondary Articulation. Check with local secondary and tech centers for a list of available courses. SALARY OPPORTUNITIES According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Statistics, automotive technology has seen a 5 percent job growth and having a post-secondary education is a benefit to employment.
