Tuning up for today’s vehicles
General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) prepares students as
state-of-the-art technicians for GM dealerships. A new generation of high tech automotive
technology demands a new generation of automotive service technicians. Students are
trained on all current General Motors products and components. The latest diagnostic and
servicing procedures and equipment are used. This program is certified in the eight
categories of automotive repair by the Automotive Service Excellence/National
Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (ASE/NATEF). The complete program is
available only at the Harrisburg Campus.
Joel Kintzler of Ephrata took HACC’s GMASEP Program.
This is an option in which students specifically train to be technicians for
General Motors dealerships. Kintzler first earned credits in HACC’s College in
the High School program while at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.

Tuning up for today’s vehicles
He is convinced entering the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) and
certifying in eight categories of repair by the Automotive Service Excellence/National
Automotive Technicians Education Foundation “is the best thing I could have done.”
The Jones dealership is high on the program. Four HACC students are expected to work
there next year, says Don Lookenbill of Lititz, service director at Jones for more than 25
years.
Lookenbill calls the HACC–GM partnership “a great start for young people who reach
skill levels after two years that 20-year veterans can’t touch.”
GENERAL MOTORS ASEP
The General Motors ASEP requires 68 credit hours for a degree. While the requirements
are generally the same as in Automotive Technology, differences do exist, such as:
„„ 22 credit hours of general education calling for specific electives such as culture
and the arts, sociology, physical science and business
„„ 43 credit hours in the major are GM specific
„„ 3 credit hours of applied math
HACC students receive millions of dollars
in financial aid annually. Fill out a federal
aid application at www.fafsa.gov. For more

advisor, warranty administrator, shop foreperson, or service manager can also be
pursued.
This curriculum is designed to prepare students to:

„„ Perform all services and repairs on General Motors vehicles
„„ Complete the eight ASE examinations(with ASEP experience of two years)
„„ Complete the Pennsylvania Safety Inspection License examination
„„ Write and speak effectively
„„ Appreciate accomplishments in the arts and sciences
ENROLL WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
Those seeking a head start while in high school can look into HACC’s College in the
High School program. “Students can earn up to 12 college credits at a reduced rate per
course at many high schools and vocational-technical schools in HACC’s service area,”
said Ross Berger, director of Tech Prep and Secondary Articulation. Check with local
secondary and tech centers for a list of available courses.
SALARY OPPORTUNITIES
