3D Printing and Embedded Systems (Special Purpose Award Certificate, Level 6). Aims 3D printing and embedded computing are emerging technologies showing potential to reach new markets and create new jobs. Students who complete this programme should be able to: Demonstrate the viability of utilising 3D printing technology to develop product prototypes Demonstrate the range of low cost embedded systems available on the market Develop skills to allow for prototype models for a range of products to be produced This programme is delivered in LIT Thurles and the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab, North Tipperary Green Enterprise Park, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary What is the programme about? The electronics and CAD component of the course will provide skills and knowledge in the areas of automation, development and design. The Fab Lab includes electronic workbenches and test equipment which, along with sensors, actuators and microcontrollers such as Arduino, allow students to develop their projects. The cross-use between these and the 3D printers and scanners will provide opportunities for students to learn design and assembly techniques for integrated projects to showcase to prospective employers. The course content on embedded computing supporting automation will provide students with knowledge and skills preparing them for development and support work in any company that uses automated production processes. Skills here transfer well to many industries and the graduates will find job openings in areas from Food production to Pharma. For example, experienced electricians could use this course to upskill themselves in the ICT area of using sensors and actuators in the residential sector. Content This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain technical skills in CAD, additive manufacturing, electronics and embedded systems. These new skills and understanding will be combined in a student project using the digital fabrication equipment located at the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab in Cloughjordan. Course Modules are: - Computer Aided Design (5 credit) Electronics (5 credit) - Embedded Systems and for 3D Printing (5 credit) - 3D Printing and Scanning (5 credit) Entry Requirements Minimum requirements will normally be a pass in six Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics or an equivalent qualification.
