AM2 PREPARATION
COURSE
The College has an AM2 testing centre at its electrical site in south
Leeds and has invested significantly in the centre to ensure facilities
are second to none.
The AM2 test must be taken by all candidates who are near
completion of the C&G 2356 Electrotechnical Technology or NVQ
Level 3 qualification either on an Apprenticeship or other training
programme. The test is also available to those wishing to accredit
their practical experience.

• Safe isolation of single-phase and three-phase supplies
• Circuit diagram theory
• Earthing and bonding
• Full inspection and testing procedure

Any Other Information
The AM2 preparation course is a 1 day refresher training course
designed to enhance students’ existing knowledge and practical
skills to the necessary standard prior to taking the AM2 test.

AM2 TEST
Qualification
This is a stand alone practical assessment that proves competence
in the electrotechnical industry.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements however this assessment is
normally taken towards the end of an Apprenticeship or equivalent
training scheme. Candidates normally hold C&G 2330 Level 2
Electrotechnical Technology and Level 3 or equivalent and are
working towards C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Services.

Progression Route
Successful candidates completing their NVQ Level 3 may be
interested in C&G 2391 Inspection Testing and Certification which is
required for progression to Approved Electrician status within the JIB
Electrotechnical Certification Scheme.
Any Other Information
It will be necessary to pass this assessment before the Joint Industry
Board grant Electrician Status to an individual applying to the
Electrotechnical Certification Scheme. It is also essential for students
working towards C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3 Installing and
Commissioning Electrotechnical Systems (Buildings and Structures).
All work must be in accordance with the current
IEE Wiring Regulations BS7671 and
Health & Safety Regulations.
Course Content
The AM2 test covers the following sections which must be completed
within the specified timings.
Areas covered include:
• Part A - Composite installation (7½ hours)
• Part B - Inspection and testing of the composite installation
(3 hours 30 minutes)
• Part C - Fault diagnosis and correction (2 hours)
• Part D - Assessment of applied knowledge (1 hour)

DOMESTIC INSTALLERS
SCHEME QUALIFICATION
NICEIC (PART P)
All personnel carrying out electrical work in domestic dwellings and
outside the property (ie. in a garage, greenhouse, shed and garden)
must comply with the requirements of Part P of the Building
Regulations.
This course meets the needs of:
• Qualified Supervisors (electrical domestic installation
contractors)
• Responsible Supervisors (responsible for several installers)
• Responsible Persons (responsible for own work)

Entry Requirements
This course is aimed at electricians and others outside the electrical
industry to comply with the introduction of Part P of the Building
Regulations. Candidates for this course should already be installing
domestic electrics and be familiar with all wiring systems.
The certificate provides two levels of qualification:
• Level A for Electricians
• Level B for those who carry out electrical installation
in association with their main role e.g. Kitchen Fitters

Course Content
This is a 5 day course that will allow candidates to become a
'Qualified Supervisor' with a firm that has registered with a government
approved Part P Competent Persons Scheme and has the full
commitment of the key trade bodies.
The course focuses on understanding regulations, standards and
terminology and ensures the candidates can identify unsafe electrical
situations and correctly carry out electrical test procedures.
There is a 2 hour multiple choice exam on the final day and a practical
assessment.

INSPECTION AND TESTING
OF ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENT (PAT)
We offer 2 portable appliance testing courses aimed at those with
administrative responsibility for the maintenance of electrical
equipment and for those undertaking practical inspection and testing
of electrical equipment.

Entry Requirements
You should be employed within the industry. This course is aimed at all
personnel inspecting and testing electrical equipment and covers the
recording, interpretation of results and the labeling of equipment.

Course Content
One day practical workshop aimed at anyone involved in
the inspection and testing of portable electrical appliances.
Areas covered include:
• Equipment construction
• Inspection
• Combined inspections and testing
• Recording and use of electrical equipment
A 1 hour on-line examination will be taken at the end of the course.

INSPECTION AND TESTING
OF ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENT (PAT)
Qualification
City & Guilds 2377-100 Management of Inspection and Testing of
Electrical Equipment (City & Guilds)
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements however you should be
employed within the industry. This course is aimed at all managers
inspecting and testing electrical equipment and covers the recording,
interpretation of results and the labeling of equipment.

Course Content
The course is made up of a one day practical workshop aimed at
anyone involved in the inspection and testing of portable electrical
appliances and one day of ‘theory’.
Areas covered include:

• In-service inspection and testing
• Procedures, documentation, user responsibilities, inspection
and testing
• Training
• Instruments
A 1 ½ hour examination will be taken at the end of the course.

There is an opportunity for candidates to carry out testing of various
electrical appliances and you may bring along your own PAT tester
if preferred.

Those carrying out the work will need a clear understanding of the
BS7671 (IEE 17th Edition Wiring Regulations) and require proof

WIRING REGULATIONS
BS7671: 2008
Entry Requirements
This course is aimed at practicing electricians with relevant experience
and other allied professionals e.g. electrical engineers, maintenance
engineers, contract managers, designers, consultants, surveyors
or other related trades needing to update and enhance their
understanding of IEE Wiring Regulations. It may also be suitable
for anyone requiring an understanding of BS 7671, although prior
knowledge in basic electrical science will be required.

City & Guilds 2382-10 Certificate for the 17th Edition of the Wiring
Regulations
Course Length
3 days from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm or 1 evening per week from
6 pm – 8 pm for 10 weeks
Course Content
The course is intended to familiarise the candidate with the layout and
application of the wiring regulations. This is the nationally recognised
minimum qualification within the electrical industry, it includes a 2 hour
multiple choice examination, which will be arranged to co-ordinate
with the end of the course.

which addresses the requirements for BS7671 in order to be allowed
to enter this qualification:

DOMESTIC ENERGY
ASSESSORS
The majority of residential properties offered for sale in England
and Wales are now required by law to have an energy performance
certificate. Two million homes are coming onto the market each year,
which means that there is a requirement for Energy Assessors to be
able to survey homes and produce certificates for these properties.
Rented properties also follow these guidelines.
Qualification
Level 3 Diploma for Domestic Energy Assessors (City & Guilds 6020)
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have experience within the building industry,
a relevant qualification and/or an equivalent level 3 qualification.
Please note there is a 4 week pre-reading period which is
recommended before commencement of the course.
It is advised that applicants have access to the internet for research
and to access the Domestic Energy certificate software.

Course Content
The course is intended to familiarise the candidate with the regulations
regarding energy efficiency in domestic buildings. This is the nationally
recognised qualification required to become a Domestic Energy
Assessor in England and Wales.
Areas covered include:
• Health & safety
• Role of the domestic energy assessor
• What is a risk assessment? – what’s involved and how to
carry one out
• Assessing the age of a property and property fixtures
• The various construction methods
• Heating systems – different types, how they work etc.
• Surveying techniques
• Software training
• Preparing relevant documentation
The course includes a 1½ hour online examination at the end
of the course followed by a portfolio assessment period which lasts
4-8 weeks. The certificate is awarded on successful completion of
both the exam and the portfolio.
