Overview
An increasing number of drive systems in a wide range of industrial applications and power ranges are being configured today in a
common DC bus configuration. This drive system configuration provides users with significant advantages such as; design flexibility,
higher efficiency, and cost savings.
A common rectifier can supply power to the DC bus for all the DC-AC inverters instead of individual rectifiers in the stand-alone AC
drives.
The power sharing on the DC bus is possible for applications where some inverters may be motoring while others in the same process
may be simultaneously generating power. The power generating inverters feed power through the DC bus to the motoring inverters. This
results in less power usage from the rectifier unit.
Cost savings are realized through the use of application rated system components such as reactors, braking units, contactors, etc. This
reduces the number of parts used on the drive system as well as assembly, wiring, wiring costs, number of failures and spare parts.

PowerFlex SCR Bus Supplies are single-direction power
converters for the front-end of common DC bus drive systems.
The supplies convert incoming three-phase AC line voltage to a
common DC bus voltage and current. The SCR Bus Supply offers
the following features:
y Six-pulse, full-wave, three-phase SCR bridge rectifier unit.
y Built-in AC line and DC bus fuses (400 & 600A units). Rectifier
branch fuses, snubber circuit and DC bus feedback fuses
(1,000A units). All fuses feature trip indicator switches.
y Overtemperature sensor located in the heat sink for thermal
protection of the SCR bridge rectifier.
y RC snubber circuit for dampening and linearity of overvoltages.
y MOV snubber circuit for surge protection.
y Precharge Board with enable contactor.
y Stand alone and master-slave configurations (1,000A units only).
A maximum of four slave units may be connected in parallel.

A minimum reactance is required to limit peak currents in the AC
line and the bridge circuit. This can be accomplished with a
matched supply transformer or by adding a line reactor to ensure
the requested minimum voltage drop over the total line
impedance. The minimum voltage drop must be 3%. Line Reactor
selection is based on the DC Amps sum of the connected drives
and the supply transformer used. Refer to page 21 for selection
information.

PowerFlex Diode Bus Supplies are single-direction power
converters for the front-end of common DC bus drive systems.
The supplies convert incoming three-phase AC line voltage to a
common DC bus voltage and current. The diode Bus Supply offers
the following features:
y Six-pulse, full-wave, three-phase diode bridge rectifier unit
directly connected to the line input terminals.
y Bus supply overtemperature sensors located in the heat sink for
thermal protection of the diode bridge rectifier.
y MOV circuit for surge protection connects to the three input
phases.
y Cooling fans powered by integral 24V DC supply.
y DC bus snubber circuit for dampening and linearity of
overvoltages.
y Integral DC chokes, input filter capacitors and common mode
capacitors compose an RFI filter meeting the requirements of
EMC product standard 61800-3 for industrial environments.

Description
The 1336 REGEN Line Regeneration Package can be configured
to address the needs of two operating modes; the Regenerative DC
Bus Supply mode and the Regenerative Brake mode. The selected
operating mode will result in different implementation costs and
hardware requirements.
In the Regenerative Brake Mode the 1336 REGEN is used to
remove braking energy from the DC bus and return it back to the
three-phase AC utility. In many regenerative applications, the
1336 REGEN offers an energy-efficient alternative to dynamic
brakes and chopper module/resistor combinations.
In the Regenerative DC Bus Supply Mode, the 1336 REGEN
supplies both motoring and regenerative current to one or more
DC input drives.
When the net power requirements of the attached common bus
drives demand motoring power, energy flows from the utility to
the common DC bus. When the net power requirements of the
attached common bus drives demand regenerative power, energy
flows from the common DC bus to the utility.

1336 REGEN Bus Supply Example
The 1336 REGEN Line Regeneration Package consists of:
y A converter that transforms a three-phase AC input source into a
DC output source.
y A precharge unit that limits the inrush current and provides AC
line voltage phase and magnitude information to the converter.
When configured as a regenerative brake, a 3% 1321 line reactor
will be required to limit current harmonics on the AC line and to
provide impedance between the regenerative brake and the
attached drives. When configured as a regenerative DC bus
supply, a 10% line reactor and an EMI filter/3% reactor
combination for high frequency noise attenuation will be required.
The 3 or 10% 1321 line reactor and EMI filter are not included in
the line regeneration package and must be ordered separately.

Description
✶ The Regenerative Bus Supply Mode can also be used for these
applications, but will result in a more complex hardware configuration and
a higher total system cost. Regenerative Bus Supply operation requires a
custom Bulletin 1321 10% line reactor, while Regenerative Brake operation
requires a standard Bulletin 1321 3% line reactor. The mode of operation
is selected by a parameter setting in the 1336 REGEN Converter.

due to overvoltage conditions when operating in the regenerative

Description
The 1336 Brake Chopper Module includes the following features:
y Protective fuses sized to work in conjunction with a crowbar
SCR. A sensing circuit within the chopper transistor voltage
control isolates the chopper module from the DC bus when an
abnormal condition is sensed.
y Chopper transistor voltage control (hysteretic voltage
comparator) regulates the voltage of the DC bus during
regeneration.
y A freewheel diode in parallel with the dynamic brake resistor
allows any magnetic energy stored in the parasitic inductance of
that circuit to be safely dissipated during turn off of the chopper
transistor.
y Chopper modules can be applied in parallel in a master-follower
configuration if the individual current rating is insufficient for
the application.
y LED indicators:
− “DC Power On” indicates when DC power has been applied
to the chopper module.
− “Brake On” flickers when the chopper module is operating
(chopping).
