Online modality:
The first 3 weeks [weeks of Aug, 26, Sept 2 and Sept 9, 2015] will be taught in LARC SH205 – Mac labusing the technology that will allow us to continue teaching and learning online. The next 11 weeks of the
semester will be taught online in an asynchronous mode using Elluminate and Moddle. The last 2 weeks
[December 2 and December 9] will be taught in traditional mode]. This will allow for the final exam to be
taken in a regular classroom environment. This hybrid/ online mode requires that the students be present at
the beginning and at the end of the semester. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions related to
the content of the class by e-mail and also in a synchronous mode on the day the class is taught from 89am.
The students who will finish the five courses of the Certificate will also have the opportunity to take the
final exam in class on Friday Dec 12, 2014

Course Objectives
To interpret simultaneously a 10-minute speech without major meaning errors, with an adequate
presentation, accurate expression and faithfulness regarding the general style/flavor of the text.
Students are not expected to interpret all details of a speech but should be able to finish all
sentences in an appropriate manner, with correct vocabulary, without meaning errors, unnecessary
repetitions, backtracking.
To analyze different structures of English and Spanish speeches/oral messages.
To improve language ability by working on oral basic skills.
To expose students to various types of situations which require simultaneous interpreting and sight translation.
N.B.Prerequisites: Six units from Spanish 301, 302 or 381 and/or Spanish 491.
Course Organization
Students are responsible for preparing the readings for every class. The readings and articles will
be discussed in class.
Exercises will be done in class and as homework to reinforce the principles discussed in class.
Listening comprehension will be improved by listening to tapes, watching videos, listening to other
students' presentations, etc.
Students are expected to be able to make an impromptu 3-minute speech on any current event topic.
Conversation will be about articles read or tapes listened to, or videos watched either in class or before
class.
Sight Translation
Workload
 There will be one journal:
Students will keep a journal of the work they are doing and the impressions they have. The journal should be
kept on a weekly basis and will be used by professor for discussion of student’s progress.

 Oral presentations
Students will present a topic of their choice. Topic will be chosen at the beginning of the semester.
Students will provide a glossary to the class one week in advance. For all presentations, students are expected
to perform professionally, prepare the topic, visual aids and information sheets and answer questions. Students
may turn in written materials of their presentation to qualified native speaker to be edited.
Duration: 10 minutes + 5 minutes for Q/A
There will also be regular oral presentations on current events [about 3 minutes].
Please observe deadlines and guidelines for assignments as your grade will be affected by your
complying to them.
Students are responsible for scheduling meetings with the instructor for questions or advice on
their work.



No handwritten assignments will be accepted.
No late assignments will be accepted.
There will be no extra credit.
