Course description
Italian 301 is an advanced level course designed to develop and refine your written and oral
composition skills in Italian through work in grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension,
textual and cinematic analysis, form, and stylistics. You will be given ample room to build your strengths,
but you will also be encouraged to identify and increase accuracy in your weak areas. Our primary texts
are Niccolò Ammaniti’s book Io non ho paura and Gabriele Salvatores’ film adaptation.
In addition to language and form, we will discuss Italian history, culture and society, especially
around the 1970s when the story takes place, and the course will also contribute to your understanding of
the regional differences between North and South and the sustainability of Italy as a nation. You will
therefore be provided with a consistent context in which to develop your writing and oral skills.
Goals and Outcomes
1) The primary goals of Italian 301 are increased proficiency in reading, writing and speaking
Italian and in sophistication in textual analysis through a variety of individual and collaborative activities.
2) You’ll be able to make comparisons between your cultures and the cultures of Italy by
examining and identifying specific differences or similarities between these cultures.
3) You’ll be able to identify some of the literary and cinematic movements of Italy and the authors,
genres or texts associated with them.
4) You’ll be able to describe some major Italian geographical regions and identities (especially
North and South), historical events and cultural questions (especially related to the 1970s).
5) You’ll participate in the making and sharing of collective intelligence by working together as a
group in many activities and tapping into each other’s knowledge and expertise.

Required Texts
Niccolò Ammaniti, Io non ho paura, Einaudi, Torino 2001. (Other Einaudi editions are acceptable).
An ebook will be available on Moodle, but owning the actual paper book is strongly recommended.
Recommended Texts
Any Italian Textbook/Grammar. The students are responsible for reviewing the grammar.
A high quality Italian-English and Italian-Italian dictionary.
Prerequisites
Ital 212 (including Ital 201 and Ital 211), completion of Intermediate Italian sequence at another accredited
institution, or successfully passed the Italian Placement Test and Intermediate Italian CAST at LARC.

Your participation in class discussions are critical to ensure the success of the
course. Your preparation for every class period is a requirement of this
course. You must have read the assigned pages and completed all homework
in advance of coming to class.
You will complete a scheda for each class time. Schede will consist of
questions about the reading and grammar activities. All written work should
be typed and double-spaced and in Italian.
You will participate in an on going class project whereby each of you will help
annotate the e-book with AdobePro, adding in the text the meaning of the
words and expressions you researched in the Treccani dictionary.
After each annotation you will create a sentence using one of the
words/expressions you found and post it in the discussion forum (along with
the original sentence from the book).
You will also use Pinterest to produce visuals of the story we are readings
(landscapes, objects, people, historical events etc.). You will be responsible
to illustrate your pins to the class for each section of the book.
You and your cohort will alternate activities each week.
These activities will broaden your vocabulary and enhance your writing skills.
They also activate what is referred to as ‘collective intelligence’, a
community-based learning approach drawing from each other’s knowledges.

Group presentations will focus on a particular topic discussed in class or
chosen based on your interests: You will prepare a media presentation (PPT,
Video etc.) to show in class.
Students will choose from a list of topics, or you will suggest your own, and
develop a creative or analytical project or paper based on the content of the
course.
Tests will assess your linguistic proficiency, understanding of material, and
sophistication of textual analysis.
You will participate in the cultural activities organized by the Italian Program
on and off campus like the San Diego Italian Film Festival, Oct. 16-25 and will
write a paragraph about it

General Education
This course satisfies part of General Education Explorations C requirement in the Humanities and Fine
Arts. The Humanities and Fine Arts encompass works of the imagination, such as art, literature, film,
drama, dance, and music, and related scholarship. Students better understand human problems,
responsibilities, and possibilities in changing historical contexts and diverse cultures, and in relation to the
natural environment. Students acquire new languages and familiarize themselves with related cultures.
They gain the ability to recognize and assess various aesthetic principles, belief systems, and constructions
of identity. Students acquire capacities for reflection, critique, communication, cultural understanding,
creativity, and problem solving in an increasingly globalized world.
Cultural Activities
The Italian Program collaborates with the Circolo Italiano, SDSU’s Italian Students Club, and the San Diego
Italian Film Festival to provide a variety of activities meant to enhance your exposure to Italian language
and culture. Participating in all or some of these activities will benefit your learning experience and will
earn you extra credits when you write at least a two paragraph review of the film(s) including a short
