COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an exploration of selected concepts in professional nursing practice. It focuses on
the differentiation of socialization to professional practice. Emphasis is placed on concepts of stress
theory, therapeutic communication, values clarification, and legal aspects.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course provides the framework for success to students entering the RN-BS program. On-ground
and online activities will guide students to learn key aspects of professional nursing. Focus will be
given to time management, oral and written communication, the RN scope of practice, utilizing SDSU
resources, and the concepts of evidence-based nursing practice.

TEACHING METHODS
The course will involve theoretical content presented through classroom lecture-discussion and by elearning self-study. Students are expected to be self-directed and actively participate in classroom and
online discussion.

BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENTS
Each week, beginning September 23, 2013, there will be activities and discussion questions posted on
Blackboard for you to complete. The week will begin on Monday and end at 2355 the following
Monday. Blackboard assignments will end November 11, 2013. Each student will be expected to
actively participate, with at least 1 post on the discussion board. Please interact with the other students.
Everyone brings to this class their own experience, education, and beliefs. By looking at this material
through each person’s unique perspective, everyone gets the benefit of a much broader view of the
material.
Criteria for Credit of Online Discussion Questions:
*Required 1 Post Weekly for 7 Weeks:
 The posting must be on time. This means between Monday morning and the next Monday at
2355.
 Citing with APA, use at least 1 peer-reviewed article & 1 online resource. Use material from
reading (paraphrase/direct quotes), online readings or other outside sources, such as professional
journals, websites, etc.
 Ten sentence minimum, which must be considered substantive.
 Please proof your work and check spelling before submitting it to be posted.

Grades are based on the quality of the student’s thinking as demonstrated orally and in writing. Local
reasoning, critical and creative thinking, and comparing/contrasting are highly valued.

All work must be written and cited in APA format as summarized in the Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association (6th edition).
LATE WORK
You are encouraged to turn in work by the deadline. I gladly accept work prior to the due date. There
will be a 10% deduction, per late day from the total grade. Late papers will only be accepted within 3
days of due date.
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is a serious breach of academic integrity. All sources used in the paper should be properly
cited. The assignments should reflect original synthesis of ideas. Please refer to the University policy
on plagiarism. Faculty is required to turn in all suspected works of plagiarism to the Office of Student

This assignment will be completed by groups of 2-3 students. It addresses a current health issue within
Imperial County that nurses can significantly impact. Please refer to the Healthy People 2020 website
for project ideas. (http://www.health.gov/healthypeople) Utilizing the content guide below, each group
will choose a health issue and develop a PPT poster presentation (1 slide) that will be delivered to the
class. Each member of the group must fully participate in development of the project and delivering the
presentation. The professor will determine individual grades based upon participation. The presentation
should be no more than 2 minutes in length (also known as an elevator speech). 5-10 professional
references, including 3 peer-reviewed articles, must be used.
The PPT poster presentation will give a basic overview of each content area. A template will be
provided on blackboard.
