E. CLASS PARTICIPATION & ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to come to class prepared and willing to participate in all
classroom activities. A maximum of four (4) absences or tardiness are allowed
without affecting your grade. Each further absence will lower your final grade by 5
points of your final grade percentage. It is your responsibility to contact the instructor of
your absences. Be reminded that three instances of tardiness (15 minutes) will
constitute one absence.
F. EXTRA CREDIT
A maximum of two (2) extra credits are allowed. Please note that extra credits
are “optional” and are therefore left to your discretion. The 5 extra points will count
towards your lowest quizzes. Submission of requirement(s) may be stipulated as proof of
attendance.
G. STATEMENT FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
If you are a student with a disability and believe you will need accommodations
for this class, it is your responsibility to contact Student Disability Services at (619) 5946473. To avoid any delay in the receipt of your accommodations, you should contact
Student Disability Services as soon as possible. Please note that accommodations are
not retroactive, and that accommodations based upon disability cannot be provided until
you have presented your instructor with an accommodation letter from Student Disability
Services. Your cooperation is appreciated.
H. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Homework and Class Work
You will be given a regular assignment to reinforce previous lessons discussed.
As a general rule ‘no make-up work’ and ‘no late homework’ will be accepted. You are
also expected to do cooperative-group activities in this class. Hence, poor attendance
can significantly hamper your class participation as well as your pace of learning in this
course.
2. Movie Reflection Paper [Due: 15 October]
You will have a chance to view a Filipino movie with English subtitle. This activity will
allow you to hear dialogues spoken in Filipino and expose you to some Filipino cultural
values as reflected in the movie. You are required to write a two-page in English, doublespaced reflection paper about the movie.
Some points to consider in your reflection are:
 How does the movie relate to you as a Fil-Am or as a non Fil-Am with regards to
the values and traditions the movie conveys?
 How are you able to gain a better understanding of the Filipino culture, traditions,
and values?
 Are you able to relate to some of the characters or situations in the movie as
someone with a distinct culture of your own? If you are a Filipino born and raised
in the U.S., is this movie able to provide you with a better understanding of your
Filipino heritage? How similar or different?
 If you were to pick a character in the movie, who would it be and why would you
pick this character?
3
3. Group Culture Presentation [Week 15]
You will work with a group to come up with a live presentation or recorded in video
that requires dialogues entirely spoken in Filipino. The presentation should be about 1520 minutes. You have to decide as to the format of your presentation e.g. news casting,
reality show, game show, etc.
Rubrics:




Theme. How relevant is the theme or is topic of the
presentation socio-culturally relevant? Does it reflect or
integrate Filipino values and culture?
Creativity. Does the video demonstrate creativity in format?
Does it use technology in a creative and artistic way?
Clarity. Is the visual and audio quality clear? Are the spoken
words understandable and fluid?
Impact. Does the final project draw attention from its
viewers? Did it achieve its ultimate purpose, that is, to
entertain and educate?
