Course Description:
Learn to use authentic, conversational English in a hospitality setting.
Develop ability to understand and communicate clearly when dealing
with guests and coworkers. Service situations – front desk,
housekeeping, restaurant, bar – will be used for role-playing
opportunities.
Required materials: Marriott CHEI (Chinese Hospitality Education Initiative) Hospitality English Student
manual, handouts, homework.
Course Goals:
1. Speak English more clearly and fluently by increasing conversation and comprehension.
2. Learn words and expressions related to hospitality and use them correctly in conversation.
3. Develop better listening and pronunciation skills through drills, activities, dialogues, and PRACTICE.
Student Expectations:
1. Arrive promptly to class. (If you know you must class, email in advance. If you miss class,
email after class.)
2. Participate in class activities and discussions.
3. Complete assignments on time, in specified format.
4. Prepare for internships by interacting with Americans & practice conversing comfortably in English!
Course Grading:
• 30% Performance. Does your English pronunciation & usage improve over the semester?
• 30% Participation, attendance, & attitude: Do you contribute? Work well in groups?
Talk or text in class? Arrive late or miss deadlines?
• 20% Practice role-plays & projects (scenarios, group presentations)
• 20% homework (including short writing assignments) quizzes, midterm, final
