Discussion of lab layout and available equipment, location of safety equipment, disposal of wastes, proper handling of chemicals. JVF, KR, and Jumpol 1. Set up lab Teams. 2. Group instruction on the use of the pycnometer and hydrometers. Jumpol 3. Group instruction on the use of the several balances in our lab. JVF 4. Group instruction on the use of the Refractometers. Get copies of "procedures" for Index of Refraction. Practice with isopropyl alcohol. JVF 5. Group instruction on the use of the Brookfield Viscometers. Get copies of "procedures" for Viscosity. Practice with viscosity Astandard@ Jumpol 6. Read the volume in two different burets. Record Avalue@ on the chalk board. We will discuss class results near the end of lab (or about 4 pm). 7. Select the Aorder@ for teams to use the viscometers and the sieves. 8 Practice use of the hydrometer and pycnometer to measure the density of several Aoils.@ 9. If there is time available, calibrate a 50 - 200 ml volumetric flask and a 25 - 100 ml volumetric pipet for use later in the course. Each person needs one flask.
