DRAFT I: WRITTEN COMMUNICATION RUBRIC Directions: This rubric serves as a tool for assessing students’ written communication skills, as defined in FSU’s Undergraduate Education Initiative (UEI). This form can be used for assessing individual students’ work. It can also tally and display learning outcomes data for an individual course or for numerous course offerings over a given time period. INSTRUCTOR/STUDENT NAME: Learning Objectives COURSE: Below Expectations Meets Expectations Above Expectations Thesis Students are able to formulate a thesis statement based in part on analysis and evaluation of appropriate source material. Support Students are able to support a thesis by synthesizing their own ideas with the ideas of others. Organization Students are able to logically organize the support according to the demands of content and audience expectations. Language Students are able to express their ideas in writing that is readable (clear, concise, and coherent) and correct (relatively free of distracting errors of grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and usage). Information Literacy Students are able to draw on controlled sources in their writing, bringing in and synthesizing the words and ideas of other writers with appropriate documentation.
