Urban and Regional Studies Institute URBS 409: Urban Analysis Discussion Outline Week 2 Topic: Power Point and Graphics Course Business Discussion Outline Find out who has used Power Point before and who has not. FOR THOSE WHO FEEL EXPERIENCED, let them come up and show how. Then show alternative ways of doing it.: Take 1 hour, and create a power point presentation for the following: Eagan City Council meeting (attached) Staff will be making an oral presentation, with PPt accompaniment. Reminders Urban and Regional Studies Institute URBS 409: Urban Analysis Activity Sheet Graphics September 5, 2006 Activity Purpose Whether giving a presentation to a City Council or to a citizen group, it is rare to find a straight lecture without some sort of visual aid to accompany the information. In many instances, presenters are bucking the cumbersome foamcore exhibits in favor of electronic presentations; they are able to be projected on a screen for easier viewing, they are easily transferred into the public realm via Internet or TV, and provide viewers a strong supplement to the material being presented. Power Point and graphics should, however, be just that – a supplement. The speaker is still responsible for knowing the material they are presenting, and turning that material into a clear, well-structured presentation. Task Remember: One lost art in public presentation is the skill of brevity. Make sure you are clear, that you get to the point right away, and that you avoid jargon and buzzwords. Don’t over-explain. Create a power point presentation that includes the following: Text: Agenda information from the Eagan City Council memo. Be sure to include custom animation for each text level Graphic: Bar, column, or line graph using the attached data from the ANES study. All data sets must appear in the graph. Graphic: Pie chart using the attached data. Use data labels rather than a traditional legend. Put the text boxes IN each pie piece. Graphic: Custom animated pictures If you have time, produce 2 or 3 alternative presentation formats for each of these items: Text: Try different animation schemes, timing (using mouse vs. automatic timing) Expected Format You Will Need Graphic: Try a different chart format for the ANES data – bar, column, or line graph. Graphic: Pie Chart. Try tipping the degree of the face, changing the colors of the pie wedges, and resizing the chart. Graphic: Custom animated pictures. Try “morphing” one picture into another – take 2 similar pictures and change them. As you animate, fade one into another. PRELIMINARY SUBDIVISION (GOPHER COMMONS) GOPHER RESOURCES ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED: To approve (OR direct findings of fact for denial) a Preliminary Subdivision of 21 acres to create 3 Lots and one Outlot on property located in the southwest corner of Yankee Doodle Road and Highway 149 in the NW ¼ of Section 13; subject to conditions in the January 24, 2006 APC minutes. REQUIRED VOTE FOR APPROVAL: Majority of members present FACTS: The site consists of a single unplatted parcel. The property is vacant. For several years, a concrete recycling facility operated on this site. The proposal consists of three office/warehouse buildings, users are not identified and should be consistent with Limited Industrial uses, Final Planned Development approval will be required for each parcel. A private easement exists across the site to provide the property to the south (Thomson) access to Yankee Doodle Road. As a Planned Development parking will be shared, the overall parking is exceeded by 41 parking stalls. Outdoor storage is not proposed at this time and would require a Planned Development Amendment if future outdoor storage is needed. A public hearing was held on January 24, 2006 at the Advisory Planning Commission, the Commission recommended approval. ISSUES: The Dakota County Plat Commission did not approve the preliminary plat in January because the proposed full access location does not meet County spacing guidelines from Highway 149. The city requested a Variance to the county spacing guidelines; the Plat Commission indicated approval if the Preliminary Subdivision on June 26, 2006, with a minor modification to boundaries of Outlot A. 120 DAY AGENCY ACTION DEADLINE: July 18, 2006 ATTACHMENTS: (2) January 24, 2006 APC Minutes, pages _____ through _____.
