DEVS 305 - Cuban Culture and Society
January 7 to March 31, 2016: Eight (8) weekly evening seminars
April 28 to May 5, 2016: Queen’s intensive pre-departure sessions
May 7 to May 22, 2015: University of Havana, Cuba

We will leave from Toronto’s Pearson airport, Saturday, May 9 and return to Toronto Sunday
May 23, 2015.
The travel package, organized by P+G Travel, includes the following:
 Accommodation, two to three meals/day, at the Hotel Habana Paseo, Havana
 Airfare, Air Canada, Toronto - Havana return
 Excursions in and around Havana
 Lectures at the University of Havana
COST PER STUDENT: $2,450 (price is approximate at this point and is subject to administrative approval).
THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE:
 transportation to Pearson Airport in Toronto
 course readings

Course registration open, Deposit ($200) (non refundable) required
to hold a place in the course.

Travel payment balance ($2,450 less $200 deposit) total $2,250 due
(non refundable).
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Application forms (attached) are due no later than 4:00 PM on Friday October 2, 2015. Please return
these forms to the Global Development Studies Office, Mackintosh-Corry Hall B401. Enrollment in
the course will be limited to approximately 30 students. Applications will be evaluated according to:
a) academic performance (B/B+ average minimum)
b) academic relevance to student’s program
c) motivation and preparation
d) clarity of objectives and expectations.
Tuition and travel costs are to be paid to Queen’s prior to commencement of the course. A minimum
of 30 students is required for the course to be realized. Please indicate also if you would like to be
considered for the Soin Enjamio Bursary ($750) available for this course. Preference is given to upper
year students, from any department. See DEVS website for further details.

ESSAY:
Please type a two to three paragraph, double spaced essay, on ONE (and ONE ONLY) separate
piece of paper describing your objectives for the course. What are your reasons for taking this
course? How does this course fit into your plan of study? What do you hope to gain from this
course? Describe any previous international/Latin American experience, etc. This essay will be
considered one of the criteria for selection for the course. If you would like to be considered for
the DEVS 305 Sonia Enjamio Bursary ($750) please explain your financial situation.
HEALTH AND CANCELLATION INSURANCE:
Each student must have the proper medical insurance coverage. The program fee includes and
insurance package (available to students under 30 years of age) and includes cancellation and
interruption, trip delay, emergency medical, travel accident, air flight accident and baggage
insurance. Travel must be to non-USA destinations. Please note that we require a photocopy of
any additional travel insurance coverage that you may have.

STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING
I understand that the following conditions apply:
1) The information recorded in the Personal Information and Special Needs section of this
form will be used only to determine accommodation arrangements, none of the
information received will determine eligibility for the course.
2) Tuitions and travel costs are to be paid to Queen’s prior to commencement of the course.
Payment of these fees is subject to the same methods, payment deadlines and penalties as
if the student were attending spring/summer course on Queen’s Main Campus during the
academic term.

 Lectures at the University of Havana
Cost per student: $2,450 (price is approximate at this point and is subject to administrative approval).
 This does not include: transportation to Pearson Airport in Toronto, course readings,
and tuition.
4) Students will require an up-to-date passport and visa if they do not have Cuban
citizenship. The passport expiry date should be a minimum of six months in advance of
return from Havana. Photocopies of passports are required, to be held by instructors.
5) Students are responsible for obtaining out-of-country international medical insurance and
a photocopy of this international insurance is required for your file in the DEVS office and
for the Cuba instructors.
6) Students are subject to the rules and regulations of the partner institution and host
country. Students who commit a breach of conduct may be subject to penalties of the host
country AND disciplinary action on behalf of Queen’s.
7) Students will be required to sign a waiver of liability before departure and undergo an
OCSAP online training.
8) While on the program there is mandatory attendance at lectures and trips included in the
program of instruction; exceptions will be granted only with formal permission.
