Films on Demand, a new database to which the Library subscribes, also provides 182 titles of Technology video clips. Access to Electronic Resources (Defined Access) The library's defined access is rated a 3 (Study or Instructional Support level). Access is provided to an extensive collection of remotely accessible electronic resources, including indexing systems, texts, indexes, journals, etc. Most of the electronic journal titles are integrated, analyzed, and accessible through the online Voyager catalog. These sources encompass titles available through various aggregator databases, ebook collections, appropriate websites, documents, and e-journals. The Library provides backfile coverage to a number of resources in electronic format via additional subscriptions. In addition, the Library provides access to Applied Science Full Text, ACM Digital Library, Elsevier ScienceDirect, and Wiley Online Library, which offers abstracts, citations and full text articles for research in various areas of technology. Links are provided in the Library catalog to journals with full text in library-subscribed databases and Internet resources. E-books in technology are accessible through Ebrary, Gale Virtual Reference Library, EBSCO ebook Collection, ACLS Humanities E-book, and ACM Digital Library. These ebooks can be located under E-Books tab through the Library homepage at: http://www.jsu.edu/library/. Subject specialist librarians also review and recommend World Wide Web sites for inclusion in the Voyager catalog or in the librarian’s library subject research guides. Examples of websites that are integrated into the Library’s catalog include the Internet Guide to Engineering (http://www.eevl.ac.uk), and The Technology Interface: the Electronic Journal for Engineering Technology (http://web.bsu.edu/tti/archives.htm), IEEE Xplore (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/dynhome.jsp). Preservation The Preservation Commitment indicator is Level 2, Content/Preservation Level/Planned Replacement. 675 titles were withdrawn in 2007-2011. Missing items are replaced by the original titles if possible (or with the purchase of new titles in the same subject area) while damaged items are routinely sent for repair. Supplemental Support The Technology collection is further supported by related collections: Agriculture; Art; Chemistry; Commerce and Business Administration; Communications; Geology; General Works; Mathematical, Computing, and Information Sciences; Military Science; and Physics. 5 REV 2011 Summary Total holdings, conspectus evaluations, and quantitative and qualitative comparisons indicate that the Technology collection is adequate to support courses for the Master of Science Degree with a major in manufacturing systems technology, and the Bachelor of Science degree with four majors: Applied Manufacturing (Design and Automation or Manufacturing Management), Applied Electronics Engineering, Industrial Leadership, and Occupational Safety and Health Technology. Strengths: The Technology & Engineering collection has grown since the last assessment in 2006. The total expenditures for the technology collection from fiscal year 2006/2007 to the present were $94,563.03. The overall average added percentage since 2006/2007 per the Books in Print database is 38% which exceedes the 3b level. The subject specialist has been working closely with the faculty liaison and departmental members for book, serial, and audio-visual material selections. The strongest subclasses within the Technology & Engineering classification are: General Technology (T) with 2,433 titles; General Engineering (TA) with 1,694 titles; Environmental Technology (TD) with 1,626 titles; Building Construction (TH) with 1,180 titles; Mechanical Engineering (TJ) with 1,251 titles; Electrical Engineering (TK) with 3,418 titles, Motor Vehicle, Aeronautics, Astronautics (TL) with 2,232 tiles, Manufactures (TS) with 1,362 titles; Handicrafts, Arts & Crafts (TT) with 2,273 titles; and Home Economics (TX) with 4,572 titles. The Electronic Engineering collection and Manufacture collection are particularly well developed. New areas of home economics such as nutrition and alternative medicine that have expanded in the recent years are being actively collected. The results of the checklist comparisons indicate that the Library’s holdings are of good quality. Half of the bibliographies consulted revealed holdings percentages higher than 43%. Though some of the bibliographies checked showed lower percentages held, this is not indicative of a weak collection as these bibliographies concentrate on subjects outside the scope of the curriculum. The Library holds or provides access to approximately 3,775 Technology and Engineering related periodicals/serials titles. In addition, several databases were added to provide access to full text articles, citations and abstracts from thousands of periodicals, conference proceedings, etc. The periodicals/serials collection is more than adequate to support the curriculum with high quality materials. A comparison of the Library’s journal holdings against the journal checklists revealed a holdings rate of 58%. The greatest strength of the Technology & Engineering collection is its journal holdings/access. Due to the Library’s database subscriptions there has been a high increase in the number of journals available for Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Chemical & Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. 6 REV 2011 The newly subscribed database, Films on Demand, amplifies the library’s audio video access. Internet sites for Technology & Engineering are easily accessible from the Library’s catalog or the subject librarian’s research guides. Web sites are reviewed for scholarly content, particularly focusing on environmental engineering, motor vehicle, aeronautics, chemical technology, and manufacturing sites. The peer Institution Comparison also showed that the Technology collection at Jacksonville State University Library ranked number four out of 14 university libraries, which indicated a strong collection (add?). Weaknesses: The checklist comparisons showed that the percentage of monographs held is low compared to RCL: Resources for College Libraries, 2007, which list all the published books since 1988. This can be attributed to some textbook titles in the lists which the Library did not collect. The checklist comparisons also show that the Library collects at a lower level than 3bp in the areas of Hydraulic Engineering (TC), Highway Engineering (TE), Railroad Engineering and Operation (TF), and Bridge Engineering (TG). However, these specialized areas are not part of the current curriculum, thus the small holdings are not indicative of a weakness for this assessment. Though not directly curriculum support, the following areas needs improving for more current information to support general curriculum: “Applied mathematics. Quantitative methods”, “Production capacity. Manufacturing capacity”, “Standardization”, “Bioengineering”, “Engineering machinery, tools, and implements”, “Disaster and engineering”, “General preliminary operations. Dredging. Submarine building”, “Highway engineering. Roads and Pavements”, “Materials for roadmaking”, “Railroad engineering and operation”, “Electric railways”, “High speed ground transportation”, “Maintenance and repair”, “Environmental engineering of buildings. Sanitary engineering of buildings”, “Lifting and pressing machinery”, “Agricultural machinery. Farm machinery”, “Mine transportation, haulage and hoisting. Mining machinery”, “Stonework”, “Chemical processing of wood”, “Mobile home living”, and “Recreational vehicle living”. More weeding in the area of cookery shall be undertaken. Recommendations: Monograph collecting in this area should continue at the 3b level for Technology overall. The areas of Automotive Manufacturing and Manufactures, which supports the graduate curriculum, should be sustainablely developed. More recent titles on manufacturing and electrical engineering should be added to the collection. Emergency management related titles should be collected to support the doctoral program in Emergency Management. (add ?) Academic journals with full-text available through databases, Internet sites, and other online electronic publication should continue to be added to the 7 REV 2011 catalog for access. The subject specialist librarian should keep up with any name changes and subscription changes, and publicize this information to faculty. 8 REV 2011 ATTACHMENTS The following table lists a sampling of the full-text journal titles related to Technology & Engineering to which the Library has print and/or electronic access.
