It is designed to give students practical work experience to supplement their formal, academic preparation. The student will become an employee with the cooperating industry. Interested students should complete the student application at the end of this package or contact the Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship The student-intern is a representative of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, and the Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship. The student-intern is expected to abide by the guidelines set forth in the Internship Policy Statement. All internships must have the approval of the Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship before employment begins. Students will earn three semester hours credit for 240 hours of work experience. Other employment options will be considered on an individual basis. Evaluation of the studentintern will be made by the cooperating supervisor and the university coordinator. Written materials, work performance, eagerness to learn, and cooperation during the internship will be considered a part of the total evaluation. The student-intern will also be required to present an oral report the semester following the internship. Please study the evaluation forms located at the back of this booklet. 1 Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Graduate and Professional Studies Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship Internship Policy Statement A. Purpose 1. The Computer Science Internship is a mutual arrangement between Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a cooperating employer to provide students with educational work experiences. 2. A faculty member from the Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship will be assigned the responsibility of coordinating activities between the intern and the cooperating employer. B. University Policy 1. The internship coordinator must approve the student work assignment before a student enrolls in 4923 Computer Science Internship. 2. The student must have a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. 3. The student will pay the regular tuition fee for the internship course and will be responsible for his or her living and travel expenses. 4. If a student is unable to complete the internship due to justifiable cause, university regulations concerning withdrawals will apply. 5. Grade will be determined by the university coordinator and the employing supervisor. 6. The intern will be required to submit written reports to the university coordinator during the internship. 7. The intern will be required to meet with other intern students and present an oral report the semester following the internship. C. Employer Policy 1. Students are expected to follow the dress code of their employer’s facility. 2. Students are to conduct themselves in a professional manner, adhering to employer policies and ethical codes. 3. A student may be required to sign a confidentiality statement. Regardless of whether such a statement is signed, a student should recognize that confidential data should not be revealed to anyone outside the employer’s organization. 2 Southwestern Oklahoma State University 4923 Computer Science Internship Catalog Description Designed to prepare students to cope with the professional challenges in the computer science field. The student must complete a minimum of 240 hours of employment with an approved employer in the area of computer and information systems support or development. The student will submit reports detailing activities. Meetings with other interns required the semester following internship. Requirements The student shall work a minimum of 240 hours within a three month period. The student shall submit periodic progress reports to the internship coordinator. The student shall prepare and present a final report to the coordinator and fellow interns the semester following completion of the work experience. Classroom Presentation During the semester following the internship, all students participating in the program will meet in order to discuss their respective experiences. During the course of these meetings, each student will present his or her final report. These reports are due at the end of each two week period. The purpose of the progress reports is to allow each student to compile a list of learning experiences which will be included in the final internship report. The report should be an accurate description of student activities at the work site. The reports should be neat, concise, and well written. Remember, these reports serve as the major contact between student and teacher and constitute 15% of the course evaluation. The student should carefully consider the content of the report. One should not use proper names, direct quotes, or reveal any confidential or proprietary information of any kind! 4 Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Graduate and Professional Studies Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship Internship Final Report The internship final report is a summation of your experiences and an analysis of the internship. It should be five to six pages of typed, double spaced text. It should have a cover page containing the date, company employer, and your name. You will also present the information in this report to other students the semester following completion of internship hours. The final report should include the following items. Why did you decide to participate in the internship program? Summarize your assigned tasks during your employment period. Were you given adequate instructions and supervision to complete the tasks in a satisfactory manner? In what ways was the experience beneficial to you? Did you learn or enhance your technical skills? Did you learn any skills to enhance your ability to work with others in a group? How did you feel about your job? Discuss both positive and negative aspects. How were problems related to the job solved? Would you recommend this job to a friend? What influence has the internship had on you in the area of future college courses, career goals, and your role in society? List any college courses which were helpful to you in your job. Are there any which might aid you in the future? Would you recommend the internship program to a friend? Please explain why or why not.
