HRTM News & Announcements
Attention HRTM Majors- Important Updates Below
Hello from the Chair;
I would like to remind students once again that San Jose
State University will be reducing admittance and enrollment
next fall (about a ten percent reduction in students and
classes). This is because of the CSU system-wide budget
reduction. One result of this reduction is fewer courses
being taught in summer school this year. In the fall, HRTM
will have fewer sections of courses and more limited class sizes than in the past –
low enrolled courses will be dropped.
It is very important that HRTM students register as early as possible for fall 2009
classes to guarantee enrollment. We will not have the funding to offer additional
classes next year. Also, when space is scarce for upper division courses, students
with approved (by your advisor) graduation paperwork will receive priority for
available spaces. Those of you who normally wait to register the first week of school,
will be in jeopardy of not getting into all your classes this fall.
If you graduated last December (2008) or will graduate this spring or summer
(2009), this is your last chance to register for our 2009 Department Convocation
on Friday, May 22 from 6:00-7:30 pm. Once again the registration form is
attached to this E-update – please complete the survey and bring your registration
materials to the front office to reserve your space at this annual event ASAP.
Finally, if you plan on graduating next December (2009) or the following May
(2010) – you do need to meet with your undergraduate advisor and file your
graduation paperwork this semester – please see advising information for more
specific instructions.
Randy J. Virden, Ph.D
HRTM Chair and Professor
HRTM Dept. Convocation will be Friday, May 22nd at
6pm (outside lawn between King Library & Science Bldg).
The HRTM convocation will take place on Friday May 22nd from 6:00pm-7:30pm on the
outside lawn between King Library & Science Bldg. This convocation is for all HRTM
students who completed their coursework in the fall (2008), spring (2009) or summer
(2009).
If you want to participate in the HRTM May Convocation, you will need to complete and
submit the convocation registration form attached above to us asap and no later than
April 10th. Please provide information for each item on the registration form and bring
(or mail) your completed registration form to the HRTM department office along with a
check for $25.00 (made out to HRTM).
Once you submit this information your name will be added to the list of participants and
you will receive more detailed information (by email) as soon as it becomes available.
We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments!
Additionally, the SJSU Commencement will be Saturday, May 23rd at 9am at the
Spartan Stadium for all to attend.
Additional HRTM Course Added for Summer 2009
Schedule
NuFS 20 (Sanitation & Environmental Issues) has been added to the HRTM Summer
2009 Schedule. This class will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays from 9-11:00am in Clark
Hall 202 and will be taught by Alan Finkelstein. This course begins June 1st and runs
through July 10th.

Advising Information
Additional information can be found in SPX 50.
- The most FREQUENT QUESTION asked of an HRTM advisor – when can I
graduate? This is a very personal question that you can answer. Use the tracking boxes
at the bottom of your advising sheet to give you a better idea. Answer the following
questions:
1) What HRTM classes do I still need to complete?
2) What GE courses do I still need to complete? (Assuming you track your progress
in your degree audit page in MySJSU)
3) Are you seeking a minor – what classes are left to complete for the
requirements?
4) Are you planning to take summer or winter classes along with fall and spring?
5) Do you have a planned absence in the coming semesters?
6) How many hours a week do you need to work or have outside obligations?
The number of college courses one should register must fit into my work/obligation
hours AND including sufficient study/prep time.
Have I allotted enough time to use meet the “study rule” at SJSU? Note: students are
expected to allot 2 hours of study /prep time for every 1 hour of class. A typical 2.5 hour
class offered 2 days a week requires 4.5 hours of study/prep time per week outside of
instruction and other obligations. Each single class requires 7 hours of dedicated
study/prep time. Do the math. (If you have less time to allot than this formula suggests,
you will need to reduce your semester course load or reduce your GPA expectations).
BEST ADVISING RECOMENDATIONS
1) Keep copies of ALL paper or electronic documents that track your progress
toward your degree completion. NOTE: Most graduation delays are related to
the student’s un-necessary “tracking down” of paperwork to justify course
completion, an approved course substitution or the replication of forms not
delivered to HRTM at the start of the graduation application process. .
2) Come to EACH OF YOUR advising sessions with your “degree advising ‘tracking’
sheet” filled in with each course completed (semester taken and grade
awarded), which classes you anticipate taking in the upcoming semester and
notes of GE and minor courses still outstanding.
Spring 2010 Graduates: Paperwork is due by July 1st. Full-time
faculty will not be on campus this summer for advising.
