This was a new area E course. Most of the assessment was focused on formative assessment of the effectiveness and implementation of the Area E term paper that addressed

SLO 1: Recognize the physiological, social/cultural, and psychological influences on their well-being

(2) What were the results of the assessment of this course? What were the lessons learned from the assessment?

In fall 2013 students were given a survey about the research paper assignment and the resources that were provided to complete the assignment (375 students responded). The survey questions and results follow.

3% The assignment and videos provided me enough information to do the library research.

The word limit of 500-600 words was too low. In the future the assignment should be kept the same and the word count range increased to 600-1000 words.

The rubric and checklist helped me understand what was expected of me to complete this assignment.

Doing the research and writing the paper allowed me to explore a topic that can help me be more successful in college.

These were short answer questions that were used to better understand the responses to the multiple choice questions.

(3) What modifications to the course, or its assessment activities or schedule, are planned for the upcoming year? (If no modifications are planned, the course coordinator should indicate this.)

Based on the feedback from students we made the following adjustments in Spring 2014 a.

Increased the maximum length of the paper from 500 to 1000 words. b.

Added a lecture devoted to peer review of student outlines c.

Provided a suggested topic list to the students to help them identify a topic d.

Modified some of the online videos and PowerPoints to provide additional information e.

Added an additional check-in point with respect to the student research

For Fall 2014 we have modified the rubric in Canvas to help automate the collection of assessment data for this assignment. We have now added in the GE Learning outcome to the rubric and will collect the data as we grade the assignment.

All sections of ENGR 10 have a common syllabus so are aligned with Area E. All sections of the course still aligned with the area Goals, Student Learning Objectives (SLOs), Content, Support, and

Assessment.
