Focusing on Skills to Maximize your FCS Classroom

TARGET AUDIENCE: This program is designed for Family Consumer Science high school and middle school educators and future educators. The program presented in the afternoon will be opened to MSU students and alumni.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: Up to 5 units/hours available

WORKSHOP SESSIONS: Please select four session options. You are guaranteed three of your four choices.

1. Make Sense of Food - Dr. Joye Bond 7. Consumerism Trends

Mary Behrens, M.S.

Learn how sensory evaluation is used in the food industry and experience the FCS Food Science and

Sensory Evaluation Labs. This is hands-on session, with activities you can take right into your foods

Learn about consumer trends that are affecting our families. In today’s economy, this is essential information to bring to your classroom.

8. Warm Hearts to Warm Hands – Dr. Jill Conlon

Recycling and/or Service learning curriculum ideas for classrooms.

2. Fashion Merchandising and Design Curriculum -

Connie Pittmann, M.S.

Explores curriculum, project ideas & PowerPoints for your classroom.

3. Obesity in America – A National Crisis –

Dr. David Bissonnette Obtain current information regarding obesity in America to update your classroom material.

4. Focus on Families

Dr. Jill Conlon

Ideas and activities for middle schools or high schools to promote “Families” in your school and community.

Let’s Play Together – Dr. Heather Von Bank

Learn about the importance of playing with children for positive development. Learn about Mankato’s Parent-

Child Play Day implemented by the Department of FCS students and faculty. Ideas will be given for hands-on activities designed for caregivers and children to play.

6. Fats: The Good, the Bad, and the Delicious –

Dr. Susan Fredstrom Get the new scoop on fats in your classroom. Take used sweaters and recycle them to create mittens. These mittens then can be used as a fundraiser or as a donation to individuals or community service agencies. Low cost project that develops student design, sewing and citizenship skills through recycling and recreating.

"Prezi"

Valorie Rose, M.S.

Prezi is a story telling and presentation tool that has replaced PowerPoint! It’s an entirely Flash-based application that lets you break away from the slide-byslide approach of most presentations. Instead, it allows you to create non-linear presentations where you can zoom in and out of a visual map containing words, links, images and videos.

Educational materials and projects developed by students and faculty will be on display.

Registrations received after October 22 or onsite

(space-available basis): $45

Full time students (no CE hours): $20

No refunds 48 hours prior to workshop date
