COUNSELORS VISIONARY
ADDRESS
Terna Engineering College always had the caliber and
effervescence of young in the campus since the starting years
itself. Hence there needed and immediate action to bring together
the aspiring and the brilliance of the students .Hence keeping this
vision in mind we formed the IEEE branch here at Nerul, Navi
Mumbai.
The branch was formed and was aimed at the students
to cultivate their in born talents in the technical and managerial
areas .It was also required for the students to have an exposure in
the fields of IT and the telecomm industry .So the opening of the
branch saw an immense response from the students who were
privileged to be the members which helped them to go a step
further with the industry. Hence now and in the future too we
aspire and aim to continue our efforts in the field of science and
take the students to a higher level.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
TERNA ENGINEERING COLLEGE pioneers in developing,
leveraging, stimulating knowledge and information in all sectors
and at all levels. The institute is in the forefront in knowledge
based services and has made path-breaking developments in the IT
sector. The college is the epicenter for a host of activities including
conferences, summits, workshops, conventions in addition to
which it runs innovative services like R&D cell, Development
labs, advanced computing centers and is supported by Professional
bodies like CSI, IETE, ISTE, CDAC etc.
The breath taking developments that are taking place
around the world have not yet percolated in to engineering
professionals and students who are to lay pivotal role in the world
in the next decade. In this context, it is felt that engineering
institutions should bring together the IT policy makers,
Academicians, R&D institutions to guide students and
professionals.
Hence for this cause the IEEE TEC branch was formed
on march 2001.There was a surge of activities and involvement
with students and initial membership crossed the required 20
barriers. That strength of 20 to 30 is still maintained to the present
day with more and more fresh members enrolling in to the
organization. With a view to accommodate and actively engage the
new members the chapter is planning to start separate
TELECOMMUNICATION and COMPUTER student branches
with involvement from the members from respective branches.

ACTIVITIES OF PREVIOUS
YEAR
The inaugural year of the millennium witnessed a spur
of activities including a plethora of events which signified a unique
blend of information services and technological issues. The year
included various activities like industrial visits, seminars and
workshops by students as well as the professionals form the
industry.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO CDAC
PUNE
As we already know that the industrial visits play an
important role at the college level. It helps the students in making
them aware of the current trends of the industry.
When we students see how our theoretical subjects are
applied, it makes move sense to what ever we have learnt. The
learning process must have a more practical approach with a bit of
fun involved which in turn gives better results.
Our Industrial visit to CDAC (Centre for
DEVELOPMENT OF Advanced Computing), Pune was a
memorable one. This is one event that none of those who were
involved in the visit will never forget. CDAC the prime research
institute made India proud by its first supercomputer. The Param
Established in 1988, CDAC is primarily an R&D institution
involved in the design, development and deployment of Advanced
IT products and solutions.

ABOUT THE VISIT
Although the trip scheduled for the 1st of October 2001,
it was long one month process of getting contacts , permissions
and gathering people and resources .Finally when the day came ,
20 students in all set off from Mumbai at 6.00 am on Monday
morning .The team comprised of the branch counselor Prof VS
Nimbalkar , Trip faculty in charge . Mr. Kilarikar, office bearers
and other students. The team reported at the scheduled
appointment time at 4 pm in the evening and contacted Mrs.
Kalpana Chandavavkar who in turn introduced them to the tour
guide Mrs.Deepa.
The very helpful lady displayed the proud of the nation
and the state of the art technology piece PARAM OF 1988 at the
National supercomputing centre. After the security clearance the
team was introduced to Mr. Swaroop the technical in charge who
spoke about the new PARAM 10000. He also showed them the
PARAM 8000 and the PARAM 9000.He enlightened them on the
facts of PARAM10000 and added that the param was powered by
the state of the art SUN Ultras pave processors and gives upto 100
Giga flops of computing power .He further added that the entire
machine costs about a 100 crore rupees and has vast applications
like processing sesium data, agricultural data and weather
forecasting. And to get such high efficiency, CDAC developed its
own internet service called as PARAM NET which has a 300
Mbps bandwidth.
IEEE Terna Engineering College
AISC 2002
The team also had a unique opportunity in witnessing
the GIST room on Graphics and intelligence based script
technology, a centre which pioneers in the use of Indian languages
on computers .The team further met Mr.Swapnil and Sourabh
Mathur who demonstrated the various packages they had
developed in CDAC, like the ISM, LEAP, and LEAP office 2000.
The delegates also added that they had developed languages
intelligent programs based on ISCLL, on Indian standard code for
in formation interchange .those such endeavors the GIST is
regarded as the authority of information exchange in Indian
languages.
As all the good times have to an end the Industrial visit
ended with a factful learning that to witness such a premier
institute like CDAC should never be missed which gives an
opportunity to the engineering students an edge over the others.
IEEE Terna Engineering College
AISC 2002
SEMINARS
The year also witnessed the seminars from different
sections of the IT industry .The month succeeding the visit was a
exposed to a lot of knowledge gaining seminars and applicative
workshops. The seminars were delivered by the industrial
delegates as well as students of the final year.
The seminars given by top delegates like Mr.Vadai on
the VLSI during the 1st week of November helped the students
come face to face with the chip industry and the large scale
integration. There was also an practical section on the VLSI that
how it works and what are the tools used .Batches of 10 each were
coached and trained separately at the highly developed labs of
cdac of our college . This gave the IEEE members to really
understand the technical backgrounds on the VLSI which they
have only read about in the IEEE spectrum magazines.
There were a numerous activities for the staff of the
college as well there was an interactive session and a workshop on
Linux and other technical aspects.
Other seminars were conducted for the first year ieee
members on Linux applications and working on Linux .This was
done by the be student of the college Mangesh Bendre and team
members .This was basically done to create an solid bridge
between the juniors and the seniors to make them excel in the
future. It helped them to gain the knowledge on Linux and also
how to present a seminar. Hence by such seminars and activities
we make sure that these are not just pay, sit, hear and go lectures
but are for application, knowledge, managerial skills and
leadership quality ones. This effort from the senior branch
members of IEEE took the initiative to spread the knowledge and
made the students come to turn to the latest technology.

PARTICIPATION
Other than being only on the receiving end our students
also took part in the events of other colleges and event s of other
non profitable organizations such as CSI, IETE etc. The students
and members of our college participated in the western regional
conference E sense and E merge 2001.To give the students a
touch of organizing and managerial capabilities they were exposed
to the environment of the annual national IT conference
EQUINOX of our college .This helped the members to engulf
knowledge on the organizing events and learning leadership
qualities. As the event Equinox consisted of 48 speakers it was
done on such a large scale which was not witnessed by any of the
institutions of Mumbai university earlier .The event also brought
closer relationships between the top delegates of the IT industry
and the students which will be a stepping stone to further develop
the branch.

ACTIVITIES OF THE CURRENT
YEAR
Like the previous year the current year also witnessed
fresh activities to further increase the knowledge of the students.
The present year gave exposure to students in practical knowledge
in robotics and advanced projects .The IEEE Tec branch hosted a
fest on pure project exhibitions and seminars .The reports on the
fests are as given below:
IEEE TEC 2002
The college and the students witnessed almost
everything the seminars the usual workshops, tutorials etc. Now it
was an urge in the minds of the students to create and involve
something different in the branch.
Hence as an out come of this thought the students and
the members of the IEEE wanted to host an project exhibition to
make the students aware of the technical background of company
projects. Hence for this thought a 2 day intercollegiate project
exhibition was conducted on 15th and the 16th of april 2002.There
was an extremely good response to this unique idea within and
out side the college.
There were 3 categories made for the exhibits related
on electronics and telecommunication, projects based on
electronics and on computers. The 2 day fest made everyone gasp
for air as the halls and the classrooms were fully arranged with the
projects. The fest was sponsored by SUN Microsystems, Aplab,
Prolific industries, and mtnl in large which helped us to sail
through the fest smoothly .The fest IEEE Tec 2002 project
exhibition was inaugurated by the chief guests ShirishDoshi,
Sanjay patange and Ravate yani.
IEEE Terna Engineering College
AISC 2002
The old adage which says that the “students are
tomorrow’s future” came true after the exhibition. They could see
things which even the big companies would have never dreamt of.
The exhibits comprised of:-
TEC-A:1. Wireless computer based control system
2. A small miniature walking elephant (robot)
3. An electronic and portable voting machine
4. Voltage regulators
5. Touch control dimmer or latest it called the tap light
6. Running displays
7. Heat controller
8. Heart beat monitors
9. Switch less musical door bell cum counter
10. C-band satellite receiver
TEC-B:1. Library based pc management system
2. PC based running light display
3. Software to convert 2d images to 3d
4. Intranet service for the college
5. Stimulation of robotic arms
6. Flash o mania
7. Infrared counter
8. Adaptive noise cancellation
9. Parallel download accelerator managers etc.
These projects opened the flood gates of knowledge
and enthusiasm to do something different. As we can saw the
exhibits held in themselves a new world of upcoming technology
which took the students to a extremely new dimension than
suffering with only the basic knowledge of capacitors and resistors.
IEEE Terna Engineering College
AISC 2002
Hence the project exhibition acted itself as a portal to take the
branch in to a new world of electrical and electronics engineers.
SEMINARS
Simultaneously in parallel with the exhibition was a
series of seminars at the halls from different companies like SUN
Microsystems where Mr. Ajith gave on the latest servers like
Solaris and other basic servers.
There was also a talk given by the corporate of MTNL
on their new mobile services and how they connect the people
across there was a huge amount of statistical data which brought to
our knowledge about the length and breadth of the telecomm
industry.
Hence by the help of such fests it open the flood gates
and created a whirlpool in the minds of the members that the IEEE
branch can do many things to lift the standard of the organization.

BREATHTAKING MOMENTS
1. It is an acknowledged fact that advances in
communication technologies are bringing the world closer and
revolutionizing it as a global village for onward progress of the
modern society and it will certainly determine the future of the
current lot of students who will be the pioneer of industry in the
near future hence it is a prime necessity that students are adept
with the latest happenings which call for increased interaction with
industry. The branch of Terna has been continuously working in
this regard but has faced challenges in bringing together high
quality professional and aspiring students in the same venue due to
time constraint schedule of industrial professionals and academic
pressure of students.
2. Further such activities would need support and actual
monetary contributed from the local bodies and the Alma matter.
Though the branch is trying to generate funds by localized
activities, support from IEEE bodies from the initial stages will
come as a breath of fresh air to help the students make their
creativity and ingenuity for a higher level.
