Describe events Briefly (Use additional Sheet as necessary) MEETINGS: 1) TECHNICAL (Including Speaker, Panel Discussions and Plant Tours): ->IEEE intra-collegiate technical paper presentation contest ->PLUG, web development 'Concepts', formerly known as 'Impetus and Concepts', is a nationwide inter-collegiate technical extravaganza centered around an exhibition cum competition for project by final year students of engineering. The event is being held on the PICT campus since 1990 under the banner of IEEE, enjoys the status of a completely corporate sponsored event. The event was organized by the IEEE student members from 13th to 18th March, 2002 under the guidance of Student Branch Counselor and other staff members of the college. The event has consistently aimed to bridge the gap between the student community and the corporate world. The project competition ‘Impetus’ showcases the best of PICT followed by ‘Concepts’, a national level exhibition and competition for final year students from the fields of Computer, Electronics and Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Information Technology Engineering. The projects exhibited, stand as a showcase of the crème de la crème of the student community of the country. The judging process employs the best from the industry and helps students interact with industry and understand the industry perspective of their project. Taking a stride on an International Level, ‘Concepts 2002’ witnessed several eminent personalities from abroad. Dr. Cor Claeys, founder Chairperson of the IEEE Electron Devices Benelux Chapter, Belgium, who delivered a talk on "Semiconductors and downscaling" on the 17 th March, 2002. Richard Stallman, President, Free Software Foundation and the inventor of the GNU C compiler (gcc) delivered a seminar on ‘Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux System’ on the 15th March, 2002 as a part of the GNU/Linux Day. Moshe Bar, chief developer OpenMOSIX software also visited ‘Concepts’ because of his interest in the projects showcased at Concepts. The event also included ‘Pratibha’, the technical paper presentation contest, 'Pradnya', the programming contest and 'Prahelika', the technical quiz contest, open to the second and third year students, as well as 'Medha', the seminar and workshop series. Concepts had always received an encouraging support from the corporate world. 'Concepts 2002' had Persistent Systems Private Ltd.(PSPL) as title sponsors, along with CalSoft Pvt. Ltd and Kuokoa Networks as co-sponsors. The event sponsors were Veritas for the GNU/Linux Day, BMC Software for Medha and Tata Honeywell for Prahelika, the technical quiz competition started this year as a part of the event, along with many other sponsors for prizes, banners and stalls. Objectives To provide a platform for students to exhibit their skills in the fields of hardware and software. To encourage interaction between IT professionals, academicians and engineering students not only from urban but also from various rural areas of India from where the participants come to participate in Concepts. To provide a stepping stone for the careers of the participants by projecting their talent in a unique way to the Industry. The competition ·The competition is open to final year students of engineering from the branches of Computers, Electronics and Telecommunications. The categories are specialized under specific titles, taking guidance from the IEEE transactions. Prizes are sponsored by prominent corporate IT houses. Students, academicians and professionals from industries attend impetus and concepts. This event is extensively covered in all local newspapers, local news channels as well as monthly and fortnightly IT publications. The CEO-Meet, a unique event organized this year, enhanced the glow of the 'Aura’ associated with Concepts. The meet invited five CEOs, namely, Dr. Anand Deshpande (PSPL), Dr. Anupam Bhide (CalSoft Pvt. Ltd), Mr. Pankaj Dhume (BMC Software), Mr. Harshad Pathak (Codito) and Mr. Tarun Malviya (Mithi.com) for an open debate on the current issues, hence concluding the event in style. To encourage the specific interest of students in common topics, our IEEE student branch also has special interest groups on Networking, Web Applications, Optics, Wireless Communications, Java and Linux. Students are free to join these according to their technical interests. These groups meet on an average of once to three times a week to exchange information and plan their activities. All necessary help and guidance are provided by Branch Conselor as well as from college authorities. TOTAL: More than 100* * As there are various sub events under which many meeting were called. 2) PROFESSIONAL (Including S-PACS): ‘Concepts’ forms the pinnacle of the IEEE-PICT Student Branch. Being an industry-sponsored event it involved a lot of interaction with professionals for the same. Along with the purpose of seeking sponsorship, we had corresponded and invited professionals with over 3 years experience in the industry world as judges for the project competition held during the event. To understand the professional’s perspective over issues like service industry verses product industry, role of research and development, entrepreneur and the effect of recession, a CEO meet was arranged on the final day of ‘Concepts 2002’. All the professionals who came in as judges, special invitees and guests as well as visitors during the event helped students gain a deeper insight on how professionals think. TOTAL: More than 100# # As most of the members were involved in organizing the event, meetings with companies/others were inevitable. 3) SOCIAL ACTIVITES (fund raising events ,pizza parties, dances etc): The PICT IEEE branch donated a few computer systems to NMV Primary School at Kasegaon, a rural area in North Maharashtra. Hon Vice-chancellor (PUNE University) Dr. Ashok Kolaskar formally inaugurated the center on 1st Dec, 2001. As a follow up and with a view to encourage PICT students to develop Education related software, a competition was conducted. In all 8 teams participated in the competition and prizes were given to the best three projects designed for the school children. The software was later donated to the NMV Primary School for educational purposes. 4) ACTIVES HELD JOINTLY WITH LOCAL SECTION (mentor program, days with an engineer, sponsored dinner, etc) ->lecture by German Professors Dr ……. & Dr Joan Barros gave seminars on future engineering education in Germany. The nationwide project competition was inaugurated , on the 16th March 2002, by Mr. Raju Hira, Treasurer, IEEE Bombay Section. On this occasion, he gave brief insight to how the studentindustry relationship can be improved. Dr. Singhvi from the Aditya Birla Group of Companies delivered an interactive talk on ‘World Class manufacturing’. The talk invoked the student attendants thinking over improving quality of the product being manufactured. A lecture on ‘Storage Management and Methods’, by Mr. Adityashankar Kini, CalSoft Pvt. Ltd was held on 9th February 2002. The lecture exploited the history and development of storage mechanisms and tools. 5) OTHER ACTIVITES (including project like Careers Day, Benox project, Students paper contest etc.) The student members of the branch very well understand the importance of an active IEEE branch counselor. Being a very understanding and encouraging counselor, the members felt him to be a person who deserves to receive a token of appreciation of the efforts taken by him in last 3 years as an ‘The IEEE Branch Counselor’. The name of our respected branch counselor Dr. B. S. Chaudhari, was nominated for the Best IEEE Branch Counselor Award. Taking into consideration the quality and quantity of work done by all the active members of the branch, the name of PICT-IEEE Student Branch was nominated for the Best Student Branch Award. An Inter collegiate Technical and general quiz was organized on 29th September, 2002. In all 108 teams from all over Pune participated in the quiz. All the participants were introduced to the benefits of joining IEEE on this occasion. An intra collegiate paper presentation contest was held in the month of August last year. The idea behind its organization was to make the students in the second year of engineering aware and to provide guidance and support about how a paper presentation should be done. The event was indeed successful in boosting the confidence and encouraging students to participate in paper presentation contests. A Student Paper Presentation Contest was held as a part of ‘Concepts 2002’. Out of the ninetyseven entries that had been received from all over the country, 14 were selected for the final presentation. These included 7 papers in the field of electronics and 7 from Computers. Our branch provided all the necessary help and guidance for the paper writing and presentation. i.
