Name: ______________________________ Date: ______________________________ Period: ______ Key: Statistics Vocabulary Term Definition How it’s found or calculated Statistics The study of the collection and analysis of numerical data; the numerical facts or data itself (mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, etc.). Many different types of statistics can be found and calculated, too numerous to list here. Measures of Central Tendency The type of statistics used to measure the ‘center’ of a data set - Mean, Median, or Mode Depends – use the method for each term Mean The average of the data Sum all of the data values and divide by the number of data values in the set Median The middle value Arrange the data from least to greatest or greatest to least and find the center value – cross off or count an equal number from each end. If there are two middle values, their average is the median. Mode The value that occurs most often Count how many times each value appears in the list. The one that occurs most often is the mode. It is possible to have more than one mode. If no number appears more than once, there is no mode. Range The difference between the highest value and the lowest value Subtract the lowest value from the largest value Name: ______________________________ Date: ______________________________ Period: ______ Statistics Vocabulary Term Statistics Measures of Central Tendency Mean Median Mode Range Definition How it’s found or calculated Name: ______________________________ Date: ______________________________ Period: ______ Statistics Vocabulary Term Definition How it’s found or calculated Statistics The middle value Depends – use the method for each term Measures of Central Tendency The average of the data Many different types of statistics can be found and calculated, too numerous to list here.
