Technology Fee Focus: 2013 – 2014 Student Technology Fee Subcommittee Objectives New services: o Collaborative learning areas (see Student Study Areas and Academic Computing Center) o Citrix deployment Continued advertising and new software support o Increase and improve helpdesk support (see Helpdesk Support**) o Computer locator Bring to mobile technology subcommittee for review for possible integration o Monthly newsletter (see improve marketing) o Continue work on EMS integration with possible review of mobile technology subcommittee. **Helpdesk Support o Have student workers put on short seminars/classes to campus community on how to use specific software and features (e.g. outlook calendar, excel functions, SPSS, smartboards, etc) – Like the STARS system that faculty and staff uses – webinars, videos – offer a wide variety of classes o Provide basic help to most electronic devices Start registration program to gather analytics on what systems to support better. o Focus on a training atmosphere More online video tutorials about commonly observed problems During welcome week hold small training sessions for incoming freshmen to learn system o Continue assessment on all services that are offered to students to determine if they are still needed or changed to make better and resource new services that are needed Improve the marketing and communication of IT initiatives, services and tools o Continue creation of monthly newletter and increase visibility of features, upcoming events, and resources available to students from ITS. Also include new technologies, computer and software updates, callouts for “dead zones”, or any other current issue. Store each month’s information for public access o Don’t always know what services are available – better market ourselves (ITS) – Have ITS new technology in college and department newsletters o Promote online learning tools (Smartthinking tutoring, MS certification, Atomic learning, etc) o Promote the Campus Computer Store o Continue update online events page & post to social media sites o Publicize and strongly recommend technology training for faculty and staff in academic technologies. o Provide information about MSU Technology and IT Initiatives for all students. Continue “Love your computer week”/ “Tech Fair” to educate the campus about technology and safe computer use. Continue to improve search results on MNSU website Network Infrastructure o Improve login time for campus computers. o Examine electrical power needs in classrooms (WH, PA, Edina, and others) o Examine power needs throughout campus for charging stations for all devices o Investigate external revenue streams (MnSCU email hosting, etc.) o Increase security and performance of networking infrastructure including wireless technology.. Blank or dead spots still remain. Perhaps provide mechanism to report such dead spots for faculty, students and employees (marketing) – o Investigate and provide better cell phone reception service o Provide better controls and monitoring systems to protect student computers from viruses, worms, spam and hacking. Core Technology Services o Improve experience for guest login capabilities for networks and computers. Investigate StarID authentication to allow visiting students to use campus resources. –Ensure this is a kind and easy transition for our users o Continue to improve MavDISK and enhance capabilities for students o Continue to work towards a paperless campus Encourage students and faculty to reduce printing and use alternatives to printing o Continue to provide reliable MavMAIL service and enhance capabilities for students. o Continue to add new technologies at the Campus Computer Store Mobile Technology o Continue the Mobile Taskforce o Add mobile device printing capabilities for student printing MavPRINT.
