Unidata Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) Training

November 3 & 4, 2003
I attended the Unidata Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) Training Session in Boulder on
Nov. 3 & 4. IDV is based on the SSEC VisAD software package, with a user interface
and enhancements developed by Unidata. The training session covered most aspects of
IDV from installation to use in combining data sets, 3D display of data fields, and
customization. IDV is free, and conversions have been developed so that McIDAS area
files (without calibration) and shape files can be displayed. Gridded, upper air and radar
data can also be displayed if they are in netCDF format. I think this package will be
useful for our upcoming work on hyperspectral data, and it appears to have less of a
learning curve than IDL. There is also talk of incorporating IDV into McIDAS. I plan to
install the package at CIRA and give a brief presentation to the team. Once we've had a
chance to play around with the software and develop questions, I'd like to have Don
Murray of Unidata come and give a more formal presentation.
