Justification for Change(s): CHANGE #1: Currently History Education students are allowed two electives in Geography, a supporting content for the courses they are preparing to teach in the K12 schools. During the current reaccreditation review of the History Education program the review team for the National Council of the Social Studies indicated that the concepts studied in Cultural Geography were essential content for pre-service teachers preparing to teach at the K6-12 level. While almost 60% of our HIED majors already take Geog. 3340 as one of their two geography electives, this change will assure that all our graduates have received this important preparation and that allow the HIED Program to align more fully with expectations of its accrediting body. CHANGE #2: History 4488, specifically required for History Education majors, was created as course specially designed to both address key concepts in understanding World History as a field of historical study, and to introduce History Education students to important approaches to the teaching of world history, especially at the K6-12 level. When HIST. 4488 was added to the curriculum HIST. 2271 was not yet developed and approved. Now that all history education majors will have taken HIST. 2271, requiring HIST. 2271 will allow Hist. 4488 build on concepts and skills introduced in Hist. 2271 to require additional more advanced knowledge and skills as expectations in the major. To assure that students are prepared to succeed, only those with Hist. 2271 will be admitted to Hist. 4488. CHANGE #3: In the Spring of 2011 and Fall of 2011 four new courses were added to the courses offering in history. These courses are being formally added to the choices in the catalog listing as options for HIED majors to complete elective coursework. Supporting Analyses of the Program – When degree or major program requirements or both are being revised, it is an opportunity to reconsider the relevance, effectiveness, and efficiency of the entire structure of the program. Following are some questions designed to provoke thoughtful evaluation of a program. If a program is being substantially revised, written responses to each of these items should be included as part of the proposal for the UPCC. If a minor change is being made to a program, writing out responses to all items is not necessary. However, UPCC members may ask about these issues during their evaluation of any proposal. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. What are the primary learning outcomes of the program? What assessment findings have led to the proposed change(s)? Evaluate the prerequisites. Why are the specified courses needed as prerequisites? Why are there no prerequisites for some courses? What is the desired sequence of prerequisites? How often are the prerequisites offered? Where within the program is an introductory overview of the major? What are the capstone experiences of the program? Where within the program are there application activities and what are the activities? (E.g., field experiences, practicums, applied projects, undergraduate research, service learning, co-ops, internships, studio work, practical problem solving.) Where and how do the following occur in the program? Writing, reading, critical thinking, presenting Participative and collaborative learning Use of information technology Global and multicultural perspectives What are the required courses that contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of the program?
