Part II: Location Will Vary Based on Format of Proposal Penn Medicine is an internationally recognized leader in biomedical research, training, and clinical care with extensive economic impact throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. In 2008, our integrated School of Medicine and Health System was responsible for 37,000 jobs, including more than 1,700 biomedical graduate and postgraduate trainees, and $5.4 billion in economic activity. The School of Medicine plays a central role in the greater Philadelphia region’s extensive life sciences network by fostering collaborations with other academic and health care institutions and alliances with a dense local cluster of pharmaceutical companies. This regional interconnectedness magnifies the economic impact of research conducted at the School of Medicine, with Pennbased discoveries frequently engendering new partnerships that widely benefit both patient care and the local economy. The School of Medicine is positioned to quickly expand its employee base and research capacity in the spirit of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
