Notes:
If proposed changes to an existing course are substantial (credit hours, title, and description), a new course with a
new number should be proposed.
A new Course Proposal (Sections II, III, IV, V, VII) is required for each new course proposed as part of a new
program. Current catalog information (Section I) is required for each existing course incorporated into the
program.
Minor changes to a course can use the simplified E-Z Course Change Form.

Course Prefix and Number SCI 7726
Course Title Life Science
Credit Hours 3-0-3
Prerequisites admission to graduate study in education
Description (or Current Degree Requirements)
This course will explore concepts and processes in the biological sciences appropriate to the
teachers of adolescent and young adult learners. Emphasis will be placed on the diversity and
unity that characterize life, the genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from
one generation to the next, the structure and function of cells, the life cycle, the dependence
of all organisms on one another and on their environment, the cycling of matter and flow of
energy through the living environment, and the basic concepts of evolution of species. Individual
projects will focus on materials appropriate for particular age groups.

Description (or Proposed Degree Requirements)
This course will explore concepts and processes in the biological sciences
appropriate to the teachers of adolescent and young adult learners.
Emphasis will be placed on the structure and function of cells, the genetic
basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to
the next, diversity and classification of living things, and the role of
natural selection in the development of the theory of evolution. Individual
projects will focus on materials appropriate for particular age groups.
III.
Justification
Concepts chosen for emphasis in SCI 7726 were taken from the Georgia
Performance Standards (GPS: http://www.georgiastandards.org) for high
school biology.
The development of a new course (SCI 7724Environmental Science) creates a slight overlap between concepts
previously covered in SCI 7726, because some high school environmental
science GPS are similar to high school biology GPS. Specifically, “the
dependence of all organisms on one another and on their environment,”
and “the cycling of matter and flow of energy through the living
environment” will now be emphasized in SCI 7724 (see new course
description, which includes “flow of energy and cycling of matter” and
“interconnection of Earth’s systems” as foci). Shifting these concepts
entirely into SCI 7724 gives us more time to focus on complicated
concepts such as cells, genetics, and evolution in the SCI 7726 course.
