Justification for Change(s) A. Changes in Political Science Requirements: 1. Replacing POLS 3315, 4415 and 4427 with POLS 3300 adjusts the HIED curriculum to reflect recent changes in the Political Science curriculum and more directly focuses our curriculum on the content of the exam required for secondary teacher education candidates to be certified in Political Science. History Education faculty and Political Science faculty have collaboratively determined that this is the best course requirement for HIED majors. POLS. 3300. is a newly created course which incorporates a solid introductory overview of the structure and functions of the constitution and its interpretation in the America court system. The content is most directly connected with the content of the GACE (Georgia Educator Certification Exam) in Political Science and the Georgia Performance Standards that History Education majors must be prepared to teach if they student teach or are assigned to teach Political Science in the K-12 schools at the secondary level. It is also now the prerequisite for POLS. 3315 and 4415, and HIED students will no longer have the prerequisites to enroll in POLS. 3315 or 4415. 2. Replacing POLS. 3334, 4435, 3350 with ECON 2100 reflects both changes in the Political Science and strengthens competencies HIED students in preparing to teach social sciences in the secondary schools. POLS.3334 no longer exists as a course and thus is unavailable for HIED majors. As well, the content in POLS. 3350: American Foreign Policy is covered to a great degree in the required HIST. 3305 The World Since 1945. While a major focus for International Relations and Political Science majors, the content in the Comparative Political Systems course is not as crucial to the content knowledge vase for History Education majors. Thus, the addition of an Economics course best serves our majors. Currently HIED majors have only the 3 hour general education economics course to prepare them in that social science field. Since our majors can be required to teach Economics during the student teaching field experience, and in preparation for the option of successfully completing the GACE Exam in Economics, the inclusion of a solid grounding in Microeconomics is directly connected to the current Georgia Performance Standards. B. Changes in the History, Geography and Education Requirements: 1. Requiring HIST. 3304: Georgia History reflects the change from the PRAXIS Social Science Exam to the GACE History Exams as the required certification exams fir teacher candidates in the state of Georgia. Questions on Georgia history compose approximately 10% of the required American History exam. Our majors need a solid preparation in the content to be successful on the exam and become certified in history. NCATE accreditation reviews the success rate of our majors on the certification exams. 2. Changes in the History and Geography course requirements in general, course additions and deletions, as well as the rearrangement of the EDUC courses merely reflect changes with the curriculum of those departments and should be considered editorial in nature.
