Description (or Proposed Degree Requirements)
The course provides the advanced practice nurse with foundational business knowledge
and the analytical and leadership skills needed in the economic environments of health
care organizations. The focus is on the financial skills needed to provide leadership in
the successful creation, distribution, and management of health care services.
III.
Justification
Originally, this course was co-designed/co-taught with assistance from the Coles
College of Business faculty for the MSN, Advanced Care Management &
Leadership Program. There are faculty members in the School of Nursing with
the qualifications to teach this course and have been teaching this course for the
past few years with a specific emphasis on financial issues for nurse leaders. The
dual label GBA/NURS has caused numerous issues and confusion in placement of
the course in the catalog and during the registration process for the students.
These issues will be eliminated with the new course using the standard course
numbering for graduate nursing courses (NURS). In addition, the credit hours for
this course provide a better distribution of semester credits for the program since
the course builds on NURS 7785 Health Policy and Finance.
