Description (or Current Degree Requirements)
This course builds upon the student’s basic knowledge of the research process. It explores
research design, methodology, data analysis, and outcome evaluation for relevant
problems encountered by the advanced practice nurse. Both quantitative and qualitative
methods are examined. Students will critique relevant studies in an area of interest and
develop a proposal related to a topic in their specific area of interest.

Description (or Proposed Degree Requirements)
This course extends foundational competencies in research methods,
epidemiology, and biostatistics. The focus is on examining research designs,
methodology, data measurement and analysis, the ethics of research, and
outcome evaluation for relevant problems encountered by the advanced practice
nurse. Theories from health care, nursing, and related fields will be analyzed and
critiqued from the perspective of theory development and utilization during
inquiry. Students will analyze relevant scientific studies and begin development of
the scientific proposal process in a particular area relevant to advanced nursing
practice.
III.
Justification
These changes provide a better match of current knowledge, educational standards, and practice
for advanced nursing as well as current trends in general professional practice in health care. The
course description and the title change also reflect the addition of the theoretical foundations and
concepts related to advanced practice nursing to the course. Nursing 7725 Healthcare Theory is
integrated into the old Nursing 7746 so the course is now a 4 credit course and allows a more
appropriate course load for the student. In addition, the integration of the two courses allows the
student to better implement the course objectives and for faculty to evaluate student learning
outcomes. Faculty and student input from previous semesters have suggested these changes.


Academic Integrity Statement:
Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct,
as published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Section II of the Student Code of
Conduct addresses the University’s policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding
plagiarism and cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation and/or
falsification of University records or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction
of library materials, malicious/intentional misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and
misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled
through the established procedures of the University Judiciary Program, which includes either an
“informal” resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade adjustment, or a formal hearing
procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct’s minimum one semester
suspension requirement.

Preparation for class and active participation in class discussion are expectations. The syllabus
may change. Students are responsible for changes in the course and other announcements in class
and by email. The capacity to receive and check email by transferring and receiving electronic
files on a regular basis is a requirement as well as the ability to use and navigate Georgia View
Vista (online learning resource).

Please refer to the College of Health and Human Services Student Handbook regarding Policy on
Bloodborne Pathogens and Academic Honesty.

Failure to practice within the Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (American Nurses
Association, 2001) will result in failure of the course.

The Policy and Procedure for withdrawing from the University or a particular class are printed in
the KSU Catalog and the KSU Student Handbook.

Notice to Students with Disabling Conditions – any student who has a documented disabling
condition that may require some special accommodations in order to meet the course
requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss arrangements. Students
should present appropriate verification from KSU disabled Student Support Services. No
requirement exists that accommodations be made prior to the completion of this approved
University process. Students may contact Student Services at (770) 423-6443, or visit the
website: www.kennesaw.edu/stu_dev/dsss.

The last day to withdraw from this course without academic penalty is March 16, 2012.
Guidelines for Specific Course Requirements: Refer to Grading Rubric in Course Resources link
1. Scholarly Scientific Proposal – Students will present a proposal related to a scientific project that the
student will develop during this course and implement in NURS 7747. The proposal will present plans
for a research project/thesis. Additional information is presented in the Course Resources and Module I.
The final proposal should be 15-25 pages in length and must conform to current APA guidelines. At
least 10 current (no more than 3 years old) peer-reviewed research journal references are required in the
literature review section. Please refer to the APA & Student Handbook discussion on plagiarism. The
paper will be graded on organization, use of correct APA format, grammar, style and clarity, relevance
8
to research and theoretical frameworks in advanced practice nursing, and accuracy of content and
comprehensiveness. Suggested research topics will be listed on Georgia View Vista to assist student
in selection of topic for paper.
2. Personal Philosophy of Advanced Practice Nursing – Each student will prepare a personal philosophy
of advanced practice nursing in whatever context they anticipate practicing, i.e., educator or
administrator. The philosophy should be approximately 2 typewritten pages in length and address each
of the areas of the nursing metaparadigm: person, environment, health, nursing, and advanced practice
nursing. Information on preparation of a personal philosophy will be posted online. Philosophies will be
evaluated for consistency, integrity, congruence, and fittingness of the concepts. Students should address
how they anticipate their personal nursing practice to be enhanced or changed with a master’s degree.
Students should NOT address how nursing in general is enhanced with advanced education. Speak
specifically to you and your nursing practice!
2. IRB Certification – Students are required to go to the IRB Homepage at KSU (a link is provided in
Course Resources) and complete the IRB Certification process. A copy of this certification must be
submitted to the instructor by the identified due date. This IRB certification will prepare the student to
submit an IRB proposal in future courses and will assist the student in understanding the ethics related to
research and human subjects.
3. Exams - The three online exams will cover specific concepts and principles from the readings, online
activities, and PowerPoint presentations. Additional information can be found in each module as well as
a study guide for the exam. Each student will be responsible to complete the exams without help from
others and must schedule a time with the instructor to “take the test online” before the due dates. The
student will have 60 minutes to complete each exam.
Late Penalty: 10% will be deducted daily for any assignment not turned in by the assigned time
and due date.
