Description:
This course incorporates material acquired in first-year courses and applies it to a real world context through fieldwork, a study trip, or other equivalent means. Students are expected to link theory with practice through a series of public and private sector site visits. Students will explore how scholars and practitioners address the dilemmas of managing policy within an ever-changing global environment. The Global Experience course is mandatory for all students. If a student cannot participate in a planned trip due to extenuating circumstances, that student may petition for approval to substitute a
Professional Experience Project in its place.

Ref: Graduate College academic grading policy: “ ‘S’: indicates that credit has been given for completion of degree requirements other than academic course work. The use of this grade is approved for thesis hours, student teaching, clinical practicum, internship and proficiency requirements in graduate programs.” ( 2010-2011 KSU Graduate
Catalog , p. 32) This course focuses on education abroad which is the degree’s equivalent to a clinical or proficiency requirement. It enables students to go into the field (i.e. abroad) much as student teachers go into the elementary or high school classroom.

May Semester IPM 7760 Global Experience
I. Description
This course incorporates material acquired in first-year courses and applies it to in a real-world context through fieldwork, a study trip, or other equivalent means. Students are expected to link theory with practice through a series of public and private sector site visits. Students will explore how scholars and practitioners address the dilemmas of managing policy within an everchanging global environment. Site visits will include sessions with appropriate government officials, corporate leaders and those involved in mid-level management.
II. Objectives
The global experience is intended to provide students with a global overview of a select world region or country to be announced at a later date. That region or country may vary, but course objectives remain the same.
Expand the student’s operational reality in the policy arena through field experience abroad
Engage the student through a systematic set of site visits that illustrate many of the concepts and issues covered in year one courses
Encourage an applied linkage between theory and practice
Provide possible avenues for internship or professional experience development or thesis topics.
III. Readings
A reading list will be formed once the global experience country is selected.
IV. Course Requirements and Grade Policy
Upon return to their homes, students will complete a 15-20 page end of trip report linking theoretical bases of policy management with specific needs of the country and/or sites they visited during the course trip. Students unable to travel will be assigned a research report that can be completed at home. This report is due by June 30.

The final grade for the Global Experience will be based on:
End of Trip Report (50%)
