COMMUNICATION SYSTEM DESIGN PROBLEM
In 2003, a USC Earth Sciences research team plans to conduct extensive
investigations of earthquake activity in the western pacific. The team will set up
monitoring sites at Fairbanks, Alaska and Hilo, Hawaii. Each site consists of a
mobile van that houses a complex instrument cluster, data recorders and other
support equipment .Little or no computing capability will be located in
Fairbanks or Hilo and therefore all the data will be transmitted back to the USC
Earth Sciences Analysis Facility (ESAF) on the USC campus for data reduction
and analysis.
Your task is to design a satellite communication system that transmits the
data from Alaska and Hawaii back to Los Angeles in a highly reliable and cost
effective manner.
