HEALTH SYSTEM CLINICIAN
Position Description (1997 to 2015)
Position Statement
Clinician who provides health care services on a full-time or part-time basis in one of the
hospitals or designated satellite locations which are affiliates of the University of Pennsylvania
Health System.
Essential Functions
 provides professional medical services to patients of UPHS
 performs prompt, courteous and competent professional services in accordance with
generally accepted professional standards for such services and with the standards
established from time to time by UPHS
 provides inpatient hospital services as required and fulfills all medico-administrative duties
associated with membership on each hospital medical staff of which clinician is a member
 participates in a minimum of 50 hours per year of active and high quality teaching or
equivalent service
 prepares, in accordance with generally accepted medical practice and in accordance with
polices and procedures of UPHS, records of all professional services rendered by the Health
System Clinician
 obtains and maintains an appointment to the medical staff (if applicable) of the Hospital of
the University of Pennsylvania and the associated faculty or academic support staff of the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
 if applicable, uses best efforts to obtain and maintain appointments to and clinical privileges
with the medical staffs of ______________ Hospital(s) and such other hospitals as UPHS
may reasonably designate
 maintains DEA licensure, if applicable
 maintains license to practice medicine without restriction or limitation in Pennsylvania, if
applicable
 obtains and maintains status as a participating provider in insurance programs as directed by
UPHS, and shall accept assignment for payment under, the Medicare, Pennsylvania Medical
Assistance and Pennsylvania Blue Shield programs, and shall participate in any other third
party payor program, including any health maintenance organization and preferred provider
organization, in which UPHS directs the Health System Physician to participate, if applicable
 complies with established policies, practices and procedures of UPHS regarding billing and
collection
 participates in CPUP malpractice insurance plan, if applicable
 abides by bylaws and policies of the University of Pennsylvania, UPHS and CPUP
Job Specifications and Requirements
M.D., license to practice medicine without restriction or limitation in Pennsylvania, DEA
licensure; or Ph.D. in applicable field
