Ideas for Presenting the Common Core
State Standards to your Staff
 Guiding Questions:
o Jigsaw activity: There are six question areas. Number staff members
off 1-6
 You may want to have a member of each grade level become
the 1-6 so teachers hear thinking from all grade levels on each
question
o Have them meet with their question group and become “experts” on
that question
 Groups should be using the CCSS Binder and Translation Guide
o Meet back with your home group/grade level and each question
expert “teaches/explains” what was discussed/learned about their
question.
 Complete the “Scavenger Hunt” activity
 Go to the Appendix C section of the Common Core State Standard Binder
o Highlight in one color the Text Exemplars you have in your
classroom library.
o Highlight in a different color the Text Exemplars you have in your
school library.
o Provide at least one idea for each highlighted book and list the
standards covered in the activity.
o Pair/Group Participant: Each participant shares ideas for their
highlighted books.
o A master idea list can be created for each book documented and
distributed.
o Create a list of books not available that could be ordered for the
school and delivered to administrators/librarians.
o In later staff development, begin moving to analyzing other texts
that meet the rigor of the Text Exemplars.
 Look at current teaching practices and compare to rigor of Common Core
State Standards
o Start labeling units/lesson with the CCSS that match
o Look at Pacing Calendar
 Curriculum Engine
o Go through basics
o Enter into discussion about how you can add Calendar Levels that
can be used for grade level collaboration/ note-taking directly in
curriculum engine
