University employees, students and visitors who generate, handle or supervise those who generate or handle hazardous waste in the performance of their duties. o Examples of hazardous waste include chemicals for disposal such as: corrosive, flammable, reactive, or toxic chemicals, oil-based paint, gasoline, ethanol, muriatic acid, pesticides, etc. o Areas that may be affected include laboratories, maintenance areas, shops, farms, printing areas, etc. What are the key requirements of this program? Hazardous wastes are disposed of at no cost, through EHS. Supervisors must: o Identify the individuals who handle hazardous waste and ensure that they receive training. o Identify a hazardous waste overseer and backup individual. o Provide Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and ensure that it is worn by employees. o Ensure that hazardous waste is disposed of properly and in a timely manner. Training Requirements: o EHS initial & annual refresher “Laboratory Safety” training. o Specific hands on training by senior laboratory personnel or the authorized supervisor.
