CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT SCHOOL BUS DRIVER TRAINING PROGRAM ALL TRAINING WILL BE HELD AT THE WALLACE TRANSPORTATION FACILITY The class will be divided into two groups, half the Trainee’s will be in the classroom in the morning, the other half will be out in the field with an Instructor. In the afternoon they will switch, the Trainee’s that are in the field in the morning will be in the classroom in the afternoon and the Trainee’s in the classroom will be in the field with an Instructor in the afternoon. Every night you will have homework (listed at the bottom of the paragraph under classroom). It is expected that you study and bring your completed homework to class with you the next day. DAY 1- Classroom - 4 hr Pre-Trip Inspection/Zonar Inspections During this class we will use a power point to go over all 6 procedures of the CDL pre-trip inspection. We will also discuss the purpose for conducting pre-trip/post trip inspections. We will take an in depth look at the components on the bus and what kind of defects to look for while doing an inspection. You will be given a pre-trip outline similar to the one you received the first day to follow along with pre-trip, except you will be required to fill in the blanks. Study Study Study… Trainee will learn different things that can put a bus out of service, refer to the Out of Service Manual and proper way to fill out a garage repair slip. Introduction to Zonar, this is an electronic devise that stores all pre-trip/post-trips/student checks. Homework- Study Pre-trip - Focus on Procedure # 1 Engine Compartment and #5 the brake test. DAY 1- Outside- w/Instructor - 4 hrs Pre-Trip Inspection Instructors will demonstrate how to conduct a proper CDL pre-trip inspection, performing all 6 procedures one at a time. After the Instructor completes each procedure, the Trainee will then perform an inspection on that same procedure. Trainee is encouraged to take notes on the pre-trip outline paper given to them from their folder. DAY 2- Classroom - 4 h Defensive Drive/Up-Down Hill/Mountain Driving/Round-A-Bouts Defensive Driving class- Trainee will be introduced to the 5 keys of the Smith System along with LLLC. Videos- Safety Basics, Intersections, etc.. You will also have a discussion on mirror usage and depth perception Home work- read chapter 5 of the Training Manual Student loading/unloading procedures Day 2 - Outside w/Instructor - 4 hrs Skills and Depth Perception Exercises Trainee will perform pre-trip procedure #1 and 5 the brake test All Trainees will perform depth perception exercises behind the wheel. (The purpose of this is to help Trainees recognize and adjust to their depth perception by exercising proper mirror usage.) Instructors will also begin teaching Trainees how to perform skills exercises for CDL skills testing. Skills exercises are as follows: Parallel Parking, Alley Dock, Straight Line Backing, Offset backing, Reverse Serpentine and Right Hand Turn. DAY 3- Classroom 4hrs Student loading and unloading Procedures & R/R crossings (Operation Life Saver) Trainees will be taught student loading and unloading procedures, safe bus stops and what the most danger area around the bus is, referred to as the danger zones. Also, importance of checking the bus after every run, and the consequences if you leave a student unattended on the bus. You will also learn Railroad crossing procedures. Home work- Read Chapter 8 from the Training Manual- emergencies, accidents, breakdowns and evacuations STUDY PRE-TRIP FOCUS ON PROCEDURE #2UNDER THE BUS AND #5 THE BRAKE TEST DAY 3- Outside with Instructor 4hrs Demonstration Drive/Trainee behind the wheel and drives Instructor will perform a demonstration drive implementing the 5 keys to the Smith system and LLLC. Trainee will get behind the wheel and practice making left and right hand turns, after accomplishing that you will go on the road and learn how to keep the bus centered in the travel lane and make various left and right turns, with and without islands, to include double turning lanes and proper lane use. Time permitting you will be introduced to freeway on and off ramps. Upon returning to the yard you will pull in and out of different parking stalls. DAY 4- Classroom- 4 hrs Classroom Accident & Breakdown Procedures/Radio use and 10 codes/Emergency evacuation drills Quizzes to be taken in class this day are as follows: Student loading/unloading & railroad. During class we will begin discussing the CCSD 10-codes, proper radio usage and etiquette. We will also be discussing CCSD procedures for bus breakdowns and what to do if you are involved in an accident. Trainees will learn how to conduct evacuation and fire drills along with learning proper use of the fire extinguisher; first aid kit and body fluid clean up kit Homework- Read Employees Procedure Hand Book Section 3 pages 13-31/Study Pre-trip focus on #3 walk around inspection . DAY 4- Outside 4 hrs Trainee will travel to Henderson Trainee will perform pre-trip procedures 2& 5 (underneath inspection of the bus and a brake test) After assisting the Instructor with the rest of the pre-trip, the Trainee will drive through the Henderson area and incorporate defensive driving skills and auctioneer to the Instructor. Trainee will be introduced to roundabouts and proper usage. Trainee will perform railroad crossing procedures. Trainee will visit the Russell yard and the Instructor will go over the proper gates to enter and exit, follow arrows and speed limit in the yard. Tour the yard and be introduced to garage personnel, office staff and drivers room. DAY 5- Classroom 4hrs Compass/Scranton/Time change/Calculating & Accumulating time/Extra time slip Quizzes to be taken in class this day are as follows; Radio use & 10 codes, breakdown, accident and emergency evacuation. In class Trainee will learn about the routing system, how to make a time change on a run in the event the run is too early or too late. What it means to accumulate sick and vacation leave and how to calculate it’ Submitting extra time slips/time slips as a temporary employee and what to do after the job becomes permanent. Accessing the employee Interact email/Procedures for bidding a route. Calling in sick procedure Home work- Read Employees Procedures Manual Chapter 6 pages 49- Study Pre-trip focus on #1thru #3 for review the following day. (Day 6) DAY 5- Outside 4hrs Trainee simulates Student loading/unloading procedures Pre-trip- Trainee performs procedure #3 the walk around inspection and #5 the brake test and the moving brake test. Trainee will travel to the Arville yard and do a tour of the offices, garage and Instructor will explain the proper way to travel through the yard in the bus and the do’s and don’ts. Entering/exiting gates. Trainee will practice Student loading and unloading procedures. Continue to practice defensive driving techniques and perform railroad crossings. Trainee will get a chance to use the two way radio and practice using 10 codes. Instructor will give Trainee a different scenario every day. Trainee will simulate Student discharge procedure (for CDL testing purposes) and proper way to pull bus over to the side of the road. DAY 6- Classroom 4 hrs Student Management/Seat assignments Quiz- Compass Power Point/discussion on proper way to manage students. Trainee will learn how to make a seating assignment for students. Proper way to document situations and correct way to fill out a citation. Instructor will give a scenario for the class to fill out citation and complete as homework. Video - School Bus Watch Importance of paying attention to who is around the schools, bus stops and the need to report any suspicious persons. Home work- Fill out a citation and bring back to class the following day. Read Employees Procedures Manual section 8 pages 60-70- Study Pre-trip focus on #4thru #6 DAY 6- Outside 4 hrs Review Pre-trip procedures 1-3/Practice Skills/Defensive Driving Trainee to perform Pre-trip procedures 1-3 and 5 the brake test and moving brake test. Instructor will assist the Trainee with procedure #4 Trainee will perform skills: Alley dock, offset backing, parallel parking and straight line backing. Defensive Driving- Trainee will continue to drive in different traffic situations. Practice student loading and unloading procedures, along with R/R crossings or simulate one if there is not enough time to perform one. Monitor Radio (make sure it is on and turned up) and practice 10 codes/scenarios DAY 7- Classroom 4hrs: Special Needs Class Trainee will go on a field trip to John S. Miller Elementary school, to see the unique way that wheelchair students with different kinds of disabilities are secured on and off loaded from the bus. Group 1 will go on this day and Group 2 will go the next day. Power point on laws regarding special needs, what an Individualized Education Program is, Aversive Intervention- what it means and how to fill out and submit the ccf 624 form Compass and map reading /Continuity folder contents and how to fill out all necessary forms associated with special needs students. Home work- Fill out left and right route sheets and look up addresses and include pertinent information explained in the class. DAY 7- Outside 4 hrs with Instructor Review Procedures 4-6 Trainee will perform Pre-trip procedures 4-6 to include the moving brake test. Instructor will switch buses with another Instructor to give the Trainee an opportunity to see the differences in the gauges and lighting indicators. Trainee to complete the rest of the pre-trip using the Zonar handheld Trainee will travel to the Cheyenne Yard and tour the yard. Practice Student loading and loading/ R/R Crossings, Monitor radio and use 10 codes, Scenarios DAY 8- Classroom 4 hrs. Special Needs Class (trainee will work a split shift this day as the drivers do) Trainee will go on a field trip to John S. Miller Elementary school, to see the unique way that wheelchair students with different kinds of disabilities are secured and on/off loaded from the bus. Group 2 will go on this day. Classroom instructor will talk about split shift and ways to manage time on your break- rest, schedule appointments etc. Power point on laws regarding special needs, what an Individual Education Plan is, Aversive Intervention- what it means and how to fill out and submit the CCF 624 form Compass and map reading /Continuity folder contents and how to fill out all necessary forms associated with special needs students. Home work- Fill out left and right route sheets and look up addresses and include pertinent information explained in the class. DAY 8- Outside with Instructor Zonar Pre-trip (trainee will work a split shift this day just as the drivers do) Trainee performs Zonar pre-trip (15 minute limit) (trainee will have the opportunity to tutor during the break) Compass- Follow a compass run or go on a run with an Instructor Freeway driving- Trainee will drive on the freeway to the Northwest yard, using defensive driving techniques to include the Smith system and LLLC. Practice Student loading and unloading and Railroad crossings Monitor radio and use 10 codes DAY 9- Classroom 4hrs Special Needs Class continued (trainee will work a second split shift this day) Homework- Turn in from map class the completed left and rights information route sheets. Video- Evacuating Special Needs Students Video- Wheel chair securement Trainee will have hands on training securing wheel chairs, installing car seats, safety vests and proper way to secure students. Pre-trip- trainee will be taken out to a conventional school bus and shown how to do a pre-trip and see where the Zonar tags are placed. Special Needs Quiz Study all pre-trip procedures- Trainee will perform all Procedures on Day 10 DAY 9- Outside 4 hrs with Instructor (trainee will work a second split shift this day) Trainee to perform skills in the yard (45 minutes) (trainee will have opportunity to tutor during the break) Trainee will be driving in high traffic areas implementing the Smith System and LLC with special attention on Intersections and the proper way to approaching and identifying stale green lights. Instructor will be discussing point of no return and covering the brake pedal at all intersections. Instructor will also discuss driving in different kinds of weather conditions wet roads, high winds etc… DAY 10/11 Classroom 4 hrs Guest Speaker Day/4 hrs Pre-trip Review In this class you will hear from different employees representing different departments; Garage Personnel- Discuss garage repair slips and different things that can put a bus out of service, regenerating which has to do with the exhaust and meeting E.P.A. standards, tire condition etc. Transportation Investigators- Explain their role in transportation and how they will interact with the drivers and other employees, gang awareness, hostage situations, emergency and accident procedures. State Test- Trainee will have to pass this test every year in order to drive a school bus. Forms- Trainee will sign different forms on this day acknowledging what has been covered throughout training. Uniform- If size available Trainee will be issued one uniform shirt. Final Drive instructions- The Final Drive is an actual route that the Trainee will cover with an Instructor after all the training and tests have been taken DAY 10- Outside 4hrs with Instructor Trainee will perform all 6 Pre-trip procedures, skills testing, and drive. Any Trainee who is not meeting standards will be referred to the Support Staff Training Supervisor. DAY 11 ALL DAY DRIVE Trainee will do a dry run on the morning portion of the route they will be covering (If available) Travel to the yard that the route will be coming out of. Work on all areas that need improvement. DAY 12 CDL TESTING This is a non paid day. Trainee will report to the yard at assigned time for testing. Final Drive Trainee report to the yard they have been assigned and drive the route with an Instructor, also to include an evacuation drill with students. Revised 2/6/14 TFB
