She heard the noise again, a faint scraping sound, but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. As she turned the volume down on the remote, she stood and looked toward the kitchen. There it was again, the dull scratching, barely conspicuous from somewhere beneath the floorboards. She walked to the hallway, slowly turned the doorknob, and opened the basement door. The noise stopped. Pausing, she listened intently for a few moments and heard nothing. Just as she was about to dismiss the sound as an overactive imagination, she heard a soft scraping, like something being dragged across the rough concrete. Curiosity took hold and she cautiously descended the basement stairs. Once her foot met the cold cement floor, she turned to the right to pull the light cord. She raised her arm to reach for the string and then saw it. Her mouth opened and her mind screamed, but no sound came from her lips. She was frozen, unable to register the horror in front of her as the terror seized her. It was hideous. When the thing suddenly moved, she snapped out of her shock, spun around, and fled the basement, taking three steps at a time.
